Hi Lyndy,

Just a couple of things. How do you know that you William's father was Joesph and that he (William ) was born in Ashton under Lyne? The 1901 Census states he was born in Manchester,A u L is some miles from the city.

I was reading something about this place the other day, think it was a later date but may be of some use. I'll try and find it.

I could not find your William in the 1871 Census for Ashton under Lyne (unless he was aged 3 and living with gm and an uncle).Perhaps it would help to get some more details of his parents. You may be able to do this as the reform school would probably have the details in their Addmissions Register. It could also be very interesting to look at the Discharges Register.

This maybe your family. The film was difficult to make out in parts.

RG 10 4052 folio 15

William DAVIS..5..S..Scholar(?)..Manchester

I realise that somethings do not match but many appear to do so.Red Bank is in the St George's district.

You will not find the Admissions or Discharges Records on the net. These records should have limited access.I am not too sure of their exact location, but they are probably kept in the nearest town or city to the institution. If someone can get hold of the records it would probably be best to look for his discharge records. This is likely to be 3 months or so before his 16th birthday. The inmates were often realesed on licence and there should be records of "after" visits by the authorities. It will also give the date of Admmission. These records usually give details of the parents and details of the "crime" committed.
