My ancestors (direct) were carriage builders, painters, herald painters, etc in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I found two addresses one in St marys place and the other in Pittock street. I found a pic on SINE website (Newcastle University) and was wondering if anyone had seen any engines in museums to do with boags. Thanks

I doubt if I can answer either way but I wonder if you may have two questions mixed up here.
You started off by mentioning carriage builders but then went on to ask about engines.

Hi Lorraine
Can you please give us a first name for one of your Boag's.
Then we can take it from there, we hope...

Hi
If this is the picture you saw, http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_image.asp?digital_doc_id=1981 , it would apear to be a manufacturer of horsedrawn carriages.
Incidently it says, (Image from LATE 20TH CENTURY) that should surely read late 19thC.
The map link on that page shows it as being close to the site of the modern civic centre (use the 1:5000 view)

Hi again
This may well have been a quite large company, there is also mention of a Boags Carriage Co in Carlisle in 1893/4 on http://www.carlislehistory.co.uk/carlislehistoryb1.html

some of my family members were down as engine painters but some were carriage builders. Thanks for the carlisle connection its great to have an address that fits in exactly with what family were told. Alfred was a great uncle down the line and my great grandfather way-back was his foreman. Before 1850's one of them was a herald painter on census need to look at that one now.
