There is an interesting site for anyone with ancestors who emigrated to Utah. "Utah Digital Newspapers". You can search the newspaper archives and maybe find snippets about your family. I've found quite a lot of entries for mine.

I would like to find anyone in Utah who is descended from Church Elder Samuel John Sudbury who went to Salt Lake City in 1853 and ran Brigham Young's mill. I would like more information about him and his family and anyone who has old photos.

Regards,

Ozzie.

A further google search shows a daughter of Samuel and Emma named Clara Ann married Joseph Edward Taylor as his fourth wife and had 8 children. Joseph Taylor had been born in Horsham Sussex in 1830. Then a daughter of theirs was Lisadore Amelia Taylor who married William David Campbell in 1907.

SUDBURY, CLARA ANN.
See Taylor, Clara Ann Sudbury.

Born 28 April 1858 in Salt Lake City to Samuel John Sudbury and Emma Grossland. Married Joseph Edward Taylor 1 April 1884 as fourth wife. Eight children. Died 3 January 1939 in Salt Lake City.

TAYLOR, JOSEPH EDWARD
Counselor to Angus M. Cannon in the presidency of the Salt Lake City Stake. Born 11 December 1830 in Horsham, Sussex, England, to George Taylor and Ann Wicks. Died 18 February 1913.

TAYLOR, LISADORE AMELIA

Thank you for all replies, I have most of the information and the photo. I'm hoping to find a living relative but have had no luck on ancestry's message bord or to letters I have sent to people who put info. on IGI.

Samuel was my grandma's gt uncle and cousin, her grandfather having md. Samuel's sister and they were also first cousins. There is a strong family likeness to my grandma.Samuel used to write to the family but alas someone destroyed all the letters years ago before any of us knew about any family in America. He had 3 wives, no.2 deserted him.

The newspapers are interesting to look through, a real flavour of life back then.

Regards,

Ozzie.:)

Don't forget that he may have had "plural wives" as polygamy was practised by the Church at that time(out-lawed by the Church 1894).
I have an ancestor whose was the second living wife-she & the third wife lived together after the death of their husband until she died too.

Yes,Samuel had three wives, his second one seems to have taken the children and deserted him. There is a piece in the old papers about him and polygamy. I had hoped that there would be someone from the family today who is interested in their family history and would swap information.

Regards,
Ozzie.

Samuel J. Sudbury is my Great Grandfather, The second wife is Whilhimina Damke, one child, Rueben Clement Sudbury. Rather than she abandonded him, she was sent off to Samuels sons farm (also named Sam) with Clement as labour for her keep. I have a biography written by Clements wife Adelphine Cope Sudbury. There are hundreds of sudburys in Utah.

Hi Larry, I'm so pleased you have contacted me. It was Samuels' second wife whom left him. I have found some descendants of Reubens' son Paul Cope Sudbury, last year. I have lots of info.and photos about/of Samuel and his family here in England and info. about his life in America. He used to write home but his letters were destroyed years ago.I would love to read the biography, I have the one from the Latterday Saints archives.I am willing to exchange information with you. It's not surprising that there are so many Sudburys when you consider how many children he had. Samuels' English tree is interesting.
