When trying to work out whos child appeared on census i searched IGI.
The following came back as mothers name:
Mary P.G.G Aunt Bennie
This seems a bit strange to be a name so i wondered if the initials stand for anything. Does anyone know?
Father name came back ok. (though still don't know where he fits in to puzzle).
Appreciate your thoughts on this one!

Hi Amanda,
Maybe her name was Mary P. Bennie, and she was the great-grandaunt of the submitter? Or Mary Bennie, the paternal great-grandaunt? (Assuming this wasn't an extraction. That would really look strange in a parish register or BT! )
This was in the IGI, not someone's uploaded gedcom in Pedigree files or Ancestry files, right? I have a lot of people with the same name (and close dates) in my database, and have been known to tuck identifiers into the names to keep them straight when searching for one. ;)
Regards,
Peggy

I think Amanda was referring to the census on the familysearch site rather than the IGI.

Hi Thanks for all your replies.
It was definately the IGI index, not census, ancestral file or anything,
I found a record of his parents marriage this morning showing they were Henry CHALMERS & Mary BENNIE so i am assuming there was some sort of error made. Would i be right with that one?
I also had a look for the batch number as requested but couldn't see it. Where would i find that? Checked Hugh Wallis site but doesn't go as far as 1879. Didn't see it on IGI.
again thanks for your help
Regards
Amanda

AmandaThere has been plenty of advice posted about the IGI. For example I think you'll find the thread "IGI Help & Guidance Please" or some such title in Genealogy Beginners.

Amanda, I think Peggy is right.
For the benefit of other readers, the entry is for a Janet Chalmers, daughter of Henry Chalmers and Mary P G G Aunt Bennie in 1877.
This record says in the messages section, "Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available. "
Only further research will tell you if the information is true.

Thanks Susan. I'd tried to find it without success.
Amanda, I see that there are 2 marriages, a submitted one in July and an extracted one in August. For the marriage, it appears that there is info available on the submitter.
As for an error, I'd imagine that the IGI contains exactly what the member submitted. No one investigates the names and details of people "sent to the temple," unless to run a check for duplication. When I was a non-member volunteer at our FHC, an occasional LDS member would wander in. (Most using the place - - - and ordering all of the films and fiche - - - were "gentiles.") The line was usually: "I want to find my grandmother on the computer and send her to the temple." What was her name? "Grannie Jones."

Thanks for all the replies.
Great insight into how the LDS works.
Have managed to track a bit more info re John Chalmers and it turns out the one i am researching is a differrent one entirely. One mystery solved and plenty more to get on with.
Many thanks
Amanda
