Lymington Workhouse was erected in 1837.
Provision was made for 200 paupers, who were separated on admission according to classification.
An Infirmary was added in 1927 which provided male and female wards, and maternity services.
These buildings continue to form part of Lymington Infirmary, but the Workhouse (although listed) now stands empty and awaits redevelopment.
Pictures are available on the Rossbret UK Institutions site at

Hope this helps,
All the best, Jan

Does anyone know how census' were taken at orphanages, or indeed, were they?
Cannot find my great grandmother from aged 4 til she had children aged 15-1 I was told she was in an orphanage then service
Presume that is why she disappears for 10 years

Not sure about orphanages, but some institutions, some workhouses for example, only show initials of 'inmates' on census returns - makes it very difficult!! If she was in service at the time of a census, though - wouldn't she be enumerated (if that's the word?) with the family she worked for?
Dennyann - might be worth starting new threads in future for your queries - that way they don't get lost in someone else's and you can be sure everyone sees the question you are asking!!
