There are an awful lot of mistakes, in place names and personal names. Makes it very difficult to search the records. I've had Burton Ferry (instead of Briton Ferry); Joan Evelyn instead of Ioan Emlyn (for a bloke!); Guynne instaed of the surname Gwynne etc.

I wonder if the results for England are as bad, or is it only us "foreigners" that they get wrong |scold|

Why would you expect the 1911 transcript to be any better than those from 1841 to 1901??

Hi Ms Tarfgi
just tried again and monmouthshire is a county they say is not ready yet, or perhaps its because they think its English, any suggestions.
Robert.

The welsh counties will be progressively coming online as the transcriptions are completed. I understood that Monmouthshire would be the first but if it isn't completed and Glamorgan is completed then it makes sense that Glam would be on first.

Lets just be thankful that it is on, without complaining too much about how accurate the transcription is. It isn't that long ago when we thought we would need to wait until at least January 2012 before seeing it at all so I am tremendously grateful for this unexpected bonus.

Oh, dear lord . . . I haven't checked yet but it doesn't surprise me that spellings are all over the place. I've found, with Welsh transcriptions, I have to try to think phonetically and then I can come close with a suggestion of what the place is and how it's spelled. I swear there are notes on every line in some transcripts.

Part of this is that vicars didn't have to speak Welsh at one time. The ecumenical law was changed sometime during the mid 1800s so that all vicars had to learn Welsh. Even today, I think Welsh place names are a problem for non-Welsh speakers.

Don't they have anyone Welsh to check spellings before censuses go on line? Perhaps they don't think it's important.

<Lets just be thankful that it is on, without complaining too much about how accurate the transcription is>

Trouble is it makes it almost impossible to search if the names are wrong.

Yes John, some of the census results on A**** are hilareous!

Probably not! If some Welsh councils get road signs etc wrong, what can we expect from an London-based organisation |soapbox|

Hi every body
Sorry to confuse you all, but I have just found a few of my Fam History on the 1911 census, what I was looking for earlier for one reason or another is not there, even though I know it should be.

Monmouthshire is on there and I will continue to try and find out why may nan is not on there.
Robert.

I'm getting the same result, Daisy.

Ms. Tarfgi -- deadly isn't it? Mind you, some of the English signs here in Canada cause a few smiles. For example: Busses this lane. I'm still wondering whether I want all those busses or not. I thought that only happened in Italy.

You'll enjoy this:

It is obvious from the barely literate nature of the entries that many of the clergy did entrust the work of keeping the register to some parish official. The rector of Llangibby, co. Monmouth, was dissatisfied with the work of his curate, to whom he had entrusted the writing of the register in the middle of the eighteenth century. The rector transcribed the entries 'being ashamed of the illiterate incorrect dirty writing of Abednego Prichard'.

I've just watched Wales Today, where they said the Welsh 1911 was on line. I thought I'd give it a little while to settle down!

The same Welsh news programme had a story about a poor young girl from Patagonia who travelled for two days to spend six months in Wales improving her Welsh, at the invitation of a Welsh family, and she was sent back to Argentina by immigration at Heathrow because they wouldn't believe anyone would travel here to learn Welsh who didn't speak English. Grrr. No wonder the Welsh transcriptions are so bad!

There's a lot of hoo-ha about it but I'm darned if I can find it either.

Found it here: http://www.ukcensusonline.com/free-search.php but I think my grandmother left the planet.

Sue -- they're behind the times, aren't they? Welsh-language speakers are growing in number. Don't they know Welsh teachers are being sent to Brittany to teach children their own language? Yes, Welsh and Breton languages are that close.

I am finding it on the usual home page, with all counties. Carmy, do you need to refresh your browser

As regards the transcriptions, the 1911 blog includes an acknowledgment to members of the Association of Family History Societies of Wales for their assistance. :)

For those of who don't speak Welsh, if you go to the 1911 Home page > About the 1911 census > Welsh records, there is some useful information, with sample pages and translation tips ;)

PS I see you've got it now :)

I have just tried going in to the usual 1911 census page. Even pressing Refresh the Welsh counties are still listed as not being there, but when I searched for my husband's grandmother in Cardiff - up she came. So it looks as if Glamorgan is certainly there.

Yep. Still lists the Welsh counties as not available under Counties Available.

I found the same thing, so Thanks so much for the heads up, since the 1911 website isn't giving anything away :) One of these days, I may even buy some credits when they get all the counties finished |oopsredfa

Isn't this exciting!

I've only tried Glamorgan so far, but as I mentioned before, the large amount of errors are making searching difficult. If you are not finding what you know should be there, try variants of names in the advance search option.

The "counties available" page is definitely out of date.

If you expected her to be in central Cardiff, apparently a large chunk of central Cardiff is missing in 1911

Found it here: http://www.ukcensusonline.com/free-search.php

Just checked this out - it only goes up to the 1901 census.

Have tried the official 1911 site and can't find any of my relatives that I know were definitely in Swansea - in fact the whole of Wales is listed as currently not available.

I've refreshed my browser, done Ctrl & R, clicked to see which counties are available on the list and on the map and none of the Welsh counties is amongst those available.

Could someone who has found the Welsh counties post the URL for the website they found them on, please?

Sue Mackay

Just go to the usual 1911 site. The list of counties available has not been brought up to date on the home page, but if you search as usual then the Welsh counties are there - at least I have found family in Cardiff, Pontypridd and Llandovery.

When the Full Search Box comes up, use the Location menu to highlight the County - the Welsh ones all seem to be there.

The problem I am having is getting on to the site. It wasn't this bad when it first went online, but now the addition of Wales seems to make it unable to connect & very slow when it does. It is midnight in the UK. You would think that it would let up some.

As I have no idea where in Wales I am looking for my family so I just entered the name and birth year in the official 1911 census site.
Within the two pages returned for the name are families in

Monmouthshire
Glamorganshire
Carmarthenshire
Denbighshire
Merionethshire
Breknockshire
Montgomeryshire

so far..... ;)

All Welsh counties appear to be online on the official 1911 Census website. I've just checked Monmouthshire and it's definitely there. The only missing ones seem to be the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Hi all
I had the same problem, knew my nan should be there, but no
tried others and found them, this is how I eventually found my nan.

Forget everything you know about them and concentrate on the surname only, then allow a larger margin on her year of birth, select possible area and your away, my nan was two years younger, bet she would be happy ha ha.

Hope this helps everyone.

I tried to find my father. I knew his exact age and the house he was living in in 1911. No sign of him. I then tried both his father and mother. Still nothing. Then I tried one of his sisters and found her and the whole family. The only thing I changed were the names. Also there were no transcription errors in the names I couldn't find. Weird.

In a couple of places in the 1901 census my grandmother is shown as 3 months old. She'd been married for a year and already given birth to my mother. Clever woman. It took me forever to find my grandmother initially and now she must have gone back to Planet X because she's nowhere around in 1911.

Ive found some of mine in Glamorgan, no problems, and nice sharp copies of the originals too.

However when I couldnt get on first thing this morning I emaile dthe help desk, within a few minutes they responded telling me to clear the temporary files and cookies and restart the computer. It worked.

Would suggest if any problems email the suport team at 1911.
