I am hoping to learn more of and share information on Amelia KOHLER, nee OFFERGELD and her daughter, Mrs S M SAUNDERS, of Mount Vernon, New York, USA.

Amelia KOHLER, nee Offergeld, was probably born in Aix La Chappelle, now called Aachen, Germany, around 1806-1811. She married Charles KOHLER, a merchant tailor with businesses in Dublin, Ireland and London, England.

Sometime after Charles died in about 1856 Amelia emigrated to Mount Vernon where she lived with her married daughter, Mrs S M SAUNDERS, at South Fourth Avenue, Mount Vernon. Amelia died in 1897 and her funeral service was held in Trinity Church, Mount Vernon.

If anyone has any links to any of these families I would be very grateful to hear more. Thank you.

As regards this SAUNDERS query, Sue Mackay said in this other thread of yours (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44737&page=2), post #17:

I have found an advert in the Dublin paper dated 30 Nov 1857 asking for creditors and legatees in the estate of the late Charles Kohler of Sackville Street. There is a boxed off section with specific names, but the relationships aren't very clear (to me). I have downloaded it as PDF so if you PM me your e-mail I'll send it to you.

The bit in the box says:
In the matter of Thomas Henry Kohler, Emily Josephine Kohler, Spinster, Infants, by Amelia Kohler, their mother and next Friend, Petitioners; Simon Maddock Saunders and Maria Saunders, his wife, Respondents.

Is this the Mrs S. M. SAUNDERS that you're looking for in the US? If so, the first names might help anyone who's looking for them? Just a thought.

In 1900 Simon is not at home (maybe he died)
Maria is with children Ida, Laura, Herbert & Lucille in Mount Vernon City, Westchester, New York.
No joy with the 1920 Census, even for Herbert.

I'm not normally lost for words but I am this time!

All I can say is a huge, huge thank you! I can't tell you how grateful I am. Last night there was still the niggling thought that I had the wrong Amelia Kohler nee Offergeld but now I am sure that the information I have all fits. Whats more, you have helped two distant relatives who I have "met" online who are also researching the Oppenheim/Kohler families - one of these relatives is in the USA and another in Switzerland. You have all certainly made the world smaller!

I've also found enquiries on Simon Saunders made upon a genealogy website by someone in Africa so I will be following that up. Oddly, Amelia Kohler (nee Offergeld) is said by a Charles Kohler in his book "Memoirs of Kohler of the K.W.V" to have been Charles' grandmother. K.W.V. is a South African wine merchants company - that is definately another line to follow up.

Again. thank you so much. I am amazed and humbled by your help and only hope that tomorrow's work as a volunteer for a dog rescue will go a small way to repaying my debt to the kindness shown to me by others.

Hi,
I believe that I am the person you are looking for in South Africa, Simon Maddock Saunders was brother to my G.G. Grandfather Thomas Henshall Saunders. My name is Rita Robinson, I have quite a lot of information on the Saunders, but not the Kohlers, although I have visited the KWV wine cellars in Paarl a few times.
