PICKFORD & CARROLL in Cheadle

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for further information on Samuel PICKFORD, born around 1811 in Mellor, and Alice CARROLL, from Carlow, Ireland who were married on the 20th June 1830 in Cheadle.

I'm not local so looking at the witnesses is going to be difficult. They very soon moved to Hyde where their first son, Daniel, was born in 1831.

Can anyone explain why perhaps some one would move from Mellor > Cheadle > Hyde?

I'm having a problem finding Samuel on any of the census returns (married to Alice). I found Alice on the 1871 living with her daughter Margaret (b. 1845 in Hyde). Also found Daniel on the later census, but nothing earlier on.

Do you know what Samuel did for a living?

In 1841 he was in Hyde, CHS. Ancestry have the index transcribed as "TACKFORD" In 1851 he was in the District of: Manchester, Prestwich, Cheetham and Harpurhey. This record was originally un-filmed due to flood damage. MLFHS worked for 14 year, I think, to rescue what could be rescued and transcribed and filmed it.

In the 1861 they were on London Road, I presume around Ardwick, probably now the A6. In 1871 you will notice that Alice was still married. Samuel was with his daughter, Ann, and son-in-law, George UPTON, in Oldham. Samuel dies in the next 10 years, leaving ALice to make it to the 1881 and 1891.

I'm really looking for siblings and parents of Samuel and Alice.

There is a baptism entry on the IGI for Samuel Pickford, baptised 23 May 1819, Mellor, Derbyshire. Parents, Joseph Pickford and Mary.

Other children listed are, Mary, John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Hellen and Ruth

Also did you notice that on the 1841 census, the page before the one showing Samuel Tackford, there is an entry for Charles Pickford age 30 and his family. Checking other census entries for Charles shows that he was also born in Mellor.

Hi Sue,

The 1819 Samuel can't be mine, as by 1841 his eldest son was 10 years old. Fitting in with the theoretical marriage of 1830.

If memory serves, I found a third PICKFORD in Hyde, not too many streets away. The Mellor connection is interesting though, particularly if elderly parents suddenly turn up.

According to Hugh Wallis's IGI site, there appear to be 4 families of PICKFORDs having children between 1800-1820, i.e. a Joseph & Sarah, James & Hellen/Ellen, Henry & Elizabeth & Joseph & Mary.

There is an extracted marriage record of a Henry PICKFORD & Elizabeth WOOLEY at Glossop on 2 March 1809, one of a Joseph PICKFORD & Sarah DEWSNAP at Glossop on 3 May 1796, one for Joseph PICKFORD & Mary ROWBOTTOM at Glossop on 2 January 1815 (which would appear to rule them out as the parents for your Samuel) and a member submitted record for James PICKFORD & Ellen BEARD at Glossop on 14 March 1819 (again too late), all on the IGI.

The LDS have microfilmed the parish registers of Mellor, so you could hire the film to view in situ at your nearest LDS Family History Centre to check for the baptism of your Samuel and find out exactly who are his parents.
