View Full Version : BOBY/POULSON/HAYWARD Lavenham/Stow/Bury
My BOBY ancestors were in Lavenham in the mid 18th century, but no trace of the name there before then. I assume therefore that there is a STOWUPLAND/STOWMARKET/BURY ST EDMUNDS connection somewhere and it's my mission to find the "missing link"
I'm back to my GGGG.Grandfather JOHN BOBY (c.1760 - 1811) who married SUSAN(NA) HAYWARD (1765-1833) on 27 Nov 1781 in Lavenham.
They had 12 children, the 11th of whom was my GGG.Grandfather SAMUEL who married MARIA POULSON on 26 Sept 1827.
I discovered on a recent visit to the area that HAYWARD was a common name in Stowupland, so whether John and Susan moved from there to Lavenham for work is open to conjecture. I know that there was a ROBERT BOBY who was a tenant farmer at Columbyne Hall, so whether there is a connection there I've yet to ascertain.
If anybody has ANY idea of where I could look for my missing link, I'd be delighted to hear from them.
Many thanks

Hello Mary,
I am sorry I do not think I can help you with your missing link, but you maybe able to help me with mine.
My husband's gr-gr-grandfather was Edward Boby, born about 1825 in Bury St Edmonds, we think. He came to NZ in 1850 on one of the first 4 ships into Canterbury. He married Hannah in 1851. He had 5 children, the youngest was a daughter Hannah Maria Boby, born 1860.
We have no information on Edwards parents or any other family in England. Do you have any more information on Samuel and Maria's children? I wondered if Edward was one of them as his daughter had Maria in her name and may have been named after his mother.
A slim chance I know, but will look forward to any information you may have.

I too had relatives in the Lavenham area and have found out my great great grandfather William Offord married Harriet Elizabeth Boby whose father was John Boby alias Poulson.
Hope this may help

Hi and very many thanks for your message. I always wonder if anybody actually reads the postings, but obviously they do from time to time! I appreciate you sending the link, it's a site I've been to many a time and found invaluable! Ray has done SO much work on it and was extremely helpful in helping me sort out various little niggles I had.
We are some sort of cousins (but don't ask me to work it out - I'm useless like that!). We share a common ancestor in JOHN BOBY (b.1761 d.1811) who married SUSAN(NA) HAYWARD (b.1765. They had many children, but two of them were JOHN (b.1786, d.1841) and SAMUEL (b.1804 d.1885). You are descended from that JOHN (who married Elizabeth Paulson in 1820)and their eldest son was also JOHN (alias Poulson) who married Sarah Carter in 1848.
As you say, their fourth child was Harriet Elizabeth, who married William Offord. Harriet had two older and three younger brothers and one older and one younger sister.
SAMUEL BOBY is my GGG.Grandfather and his son ALFRED (b.1827) was a first cousin to John, Harriet's father.
I hope I've explained it clearly enough! I'm in the process of putting it all onto Genes Connected, so if you're a member you could send me a message via GC and ask if you can see my tree and I could see yours.
Very best wishes to a new cousin
Mary

Hi Sandra
So sorry to be so tardy in getting back to you. I flagged the message but it got rather far down my inbox and then I lost a couple of years' worth of genealogy messages from various people when my ISP went down for a few days. I only found it again when I had another reply a couple of days ago.
Anyway, I'm afraid Edward isn't one of Samuel and Maria's children. In fact, Edward isn't a name that crops up at all in our branch. Lots of Roberts, Williams and Samuels, Johns and the odd Charles and Alfred thrown in for good measure. I've had a look at other trees I have from a different side, but no mention of an Edward there either.
I suspect he must be in the branch I'm trying to find a connection with!!
Funnily enough, we were in NZ in March last year (absolutely wonderful country) and while I was doing some internet research I found a hotel on South Island which mentioned a Boby's stream (or creek). I wonder if it had anything to do with your Edward?
Anyway, if you need to contact me direct, try "heywoodfamily44@yahoo.co.uk" (without the " of course!)
Very best wishes,
Mary :)
