First before all you Mancunians Jump on me I know that Manchester and Salford are two places, but there is a reason for my heading :-)
I have been googling all the afternoon to find the names of any newspapers being published in the Manchester and or Salford area in 1873. but without successs.
Cany anyone help with some titles and the possible location of filmed copies which are available for reading.
My putative grandfather Peter McKie was brought up before the Salford or Manchester Quarter Sessions on 14 April 1873 charged with theft and receiving. I am hoping to find a record of the case in the hope that it mentions his birthplace. My grandfather appears on all the censuses from 1881 to 1901 and each time said his place of birth was Scotland !
This is why I need some other source for a birthplace- I have two possible candidates on the OPRs but hope to eliminate one of them at some stage.
Thanks..Ed
Try using the search facility at the British Library Newspaper site at www.
bl.uk/catalogues/newspapers/welcome.asp You can search by place and it will come up with a list of newspapers (and their dates) which cover that area.
Best wishes
Ann :)

Thanks for the suggestion Ann, but I had done that and it was not a great deal of help. It threw up 1226 options, and after wading through every title which looked like a newspaper with Salford and Manchester in the title, only to find that Colinwood did not have the relevant years on microfilm. So I was hoping that perhaps a more locally orientated repository would be more complete.

Cheers..EdEd, having recently being looking at newspapers from 1868, I can, with confidence, say that Manchester Central Library have such holdings.
If you post the full details, well as full as you have, here, you never know your luck. I'm due for another visit!
John
Ed, I see you have already posted enough information. J

I am really most obliged for that. Not what I had hoped for (perhaps unreasonably) but I have been persuieng my grandfathers birthplace for over fifteen years, so sometimes the straws look like a lifeline :-)

It looks like this guy was in Farnborough in 1871,but it is not too much of a help as it gives his birthplace as Scotland.
MCL do a photocopying service, so if you have a look on their website you can get the details from there.I think for overseas customers they charge £1.00 per copy.Failing that we can probably work something else out.

Thanks for that. I did know about the Farnborough, in fact worked backwards from that. Will contact MCL as suggested. Thanks again.
