And just in case you have not seen it there is a reference in Cheshire Parish and Probate Records, Wills and Inventories 1811 - 1820
Swindells, Mottershead (the elder) of Macclesfield, twister. 28 Nov 1817
now preserved in the Probate Registry at Chester.
Also the Marriage of Mottershead Swindells to Jemimah Booth in 1810 at Gawsworth. (Pallots)
What a fantastic name :)

mottershead swindells who i'm chasing died 1869 he was only a silk weaver so probably didn't leave a will as his wife survived him by 7 years, according to 1861 census he was born in sherborne dorset and there is a mottershead swindle baptism reg 1789 in sherborne trying to find how he came from dorset to cheshire.

Just a little aside to you Sue. You are extremely lucky to have such a splendid forename for your Swindells guy in the Stockport area, because - believe me - they are legion! I doubt I've seen a parish register without Swindells in it over the past quarter of a century :D
As for a silk weaver not leaving a will - don't be too sure. Silk weavers came in all strengths :) - from those who worked in a factory to the big manufacturers. If you are able, you simply must splash out the £6 or £7 it would cost you to get those two wills Gasser suggests - you can pay online and the wills would be with you within about 10 days. I think three Mottershead Swindells are too oddly named not to be related, don't you? The two older Motties may mention Dorset in their wills, which would help you.
Good Luck.

I found the 1789 Sherborne baptism to which you refer showing his parents as Peter and Mary Swindels. I have not found a marriage for Peter and Mary, however, a further search shows Mary Ann, daughter of Peter and Mary Swindels bapt. March 18 1792 at St Michael's Church, Macclesfield, . It may be possible that Peter was from the Macclesfield area originally. There is a will at Cheshire for PETER SWINDELLS MACCLESFIELD YEOMAN dated 1843. This might be worth investigating.

I'm in Gasser's corner with this. I URGE you to search in Cheshire for all things Swindells. It could well be that they originated there and one man moved down to Hardy country with his job for a while.
I have a gut feeling about this for you, Sue. It really is a very strong name in the Cheshire area. In fact I think you will find that it is a Northern surname, and although this does not necessarily mitigate against Dorset origins, I would turn my eyes north if I were you. :D In fact - Mottershead also abounds - especially around the Malpas area. The two combined screams North to me.

There is a website on google search (Macclesfield Pews - 3rd one down)which gives list of people who bought Pews at St Michael's Church in Macclesfield between 1670 and 1767 . I know this is out of your time frame but there are a few Swindell names mentioned.
