I have spent some time looking at 1911 census and am trying to find out where 3 streets are in relation to one another. They are all in the Shoreditch/Hoxton area of London? They are McGrath's Place, Fanshaw Street and Ashford Street.
Can anyone help please????
Thanks

My early map of Limehouse does not cover as far as Shoreditch, but I have looked these up on a London A-Z, both Fanshaw St. & Ashford St. still exist off of Pitfield St. in Limhouse and they run parallel to each other. Hopefully someone else will have an early map that covers this area and will be able to tell you where McGraths Place was

Hi Penny
Would you believe I started by googling McGraths Place but it didn't come up so I made a stupid assumption that the same would be true of Fanshaw and Ashford. No excuse for my stupidity other than I have been researching all day. I'm getting brain dead.
I live in the east end of London - why didn't I think of looking in the A-Z.
Thank you. I think the lesson is - start with the obvious.

None of my old maps show a McGraths Place. Nearest I can find is one that is there today (A-Z ;))
McGraths Road, Stratford.

According to the 1901 census enumerator's description, McGrath's Place was off the east side of Hoxton Street, in the section between Drysdale Street and Redvers Street, near Hoxton House Lunatic Asylum. It must have been more or less where Hackney Community College now stands ;)

Drysdale St can be seen in the top left hand corner of this sheet (http://archivemaps.com/mapco/stanford/stan38.htm), immediately above Shoreditch Station. Above Drysdale St can be seen ????? Place, on the very edge of the map. Could this be McGrath's Place?
Naturally Murphy's Law comes into play, and owing to wear and tear to the map, nothing can be seen on the adjoining sheet.
Finbar, I wondered the same, but looking at the adjoining sheet I think it might be Windsor Place?

Hi everyone
Thank you for your suggestions.
On the 1911 census my ancestor William Gaine (who is incidentally down as 10 and a female) with an occupation as Greengrocer got me to thinking that perhaps as he was boarding with William Bailey, a general dealer and a Sam Smith, also a boarder and greengrocer, perhaps McGrath Place is either near Petticoat Lane (Wentworth Street off of Liverpool Street) or alternatively Spitalfields, which used to be a fruit and veg market until the City of London encroached on it.
Also the emumeration district is down as 9 - does anyone know how I can view the description of that district.
Thanks

I think not. McGrath's Place is clearly enumerated and described in the 1901 census. Please see my message #5 above. This is so close to Fanshaw Street and Ashford Street that it just has to be the place you're looking for ;)

Not until the RG78 material comes online for 1911. But it was also ED 9 in 1901 (please see above).

I just double-checked the 1901 reference for you, and it is indeed in ED 9 ;)
