Hi,
Can anyone help me with this : A birth certificate for a child born in 1921 in uk has a notation in the margin "Adopted" followed by the superintendant registras name.

I know that until 1927 there was no formal process for adoption, and children were often left with family.
The child's birth was registered a month after birth, by her natural mother.

I would like to understand what reason there would be for this to happen, does it mean that some formal procedure took place and if so what? Would it of been added later to certificate?

Many thanks for any help to clear this up,
Kate

As I understand it, this would relate to an adoption that took place in or after 1927.

Well, if you were really hoping to trace the child further, your problems have really only just started!

I hope I'm not talking through my hat but if the birth certificate was marked "adopted" there will be a corresponding entry in the index to the Adopted Childrens Register which is held at the FRC. But that entry will be under the child's new adopted name. And if you don't know what that was.....

I may have her adopted name, though no real proof yet, so it looks as if I will have to get down to london for a look . :)

You might be in luck then. Sorry, I'm not aware of the index being available elsewhere. But I'm sure you'll find plenty of other things to do while you're there :)
