Hi,
I am trying to find information about the parents and siblings of Eliza Rossiter born circa 1856 in Cheltenham.
Her family were quite well-to-do I believe so it's possible that she was born in one of the more affluent areas of Cheltenham.
She later married Alfred George Davis ( born Bristol 1848) but I'm not exactly sure where.
They had a number of children whoi were baptised at St Clements in Bristol.
The children were:-
Emma Agnes born 1875
Selina Matilda born 1877
Adda Elizabeth born 1879
Frederick born 1882
Florence born 1890
Carrie born 1892
The 1881 Census lists Alfred, Eliza and their first three children as living in Bristol St Pauls.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
best wishes

Hi Steve,
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to find that. I suspect that if we had access to the 1861 Census and it was indexed we would have found Eliza's parents.
Since I posted I've continued to research Eliza and interestingly have come up with an IGI record for her under the name "Elisa Rossiter". She was baptised at St Philip and Jacob, Bristol Gloucester and I believe that we are both talking about the same person.
The IGI record lists her parents as Samuel Rossiter and Emma ( maiden name unknown). Also,I found records for other children in the same family.
The other children, all baptised at St Philip & St Jacob, were:-
Emma baptised 24.10.1852
Thomas baptised 20.8.1854
My prime concern is to gather details about the parents Samuel & Emma. I suspect that there may be other children still at home with them but have no names other than those specified at the moment.
Could you check if you can find details of Samuel & Emma please?TIA.
best wishes

There were two Samuel Rossiters in Bristol in 1851. Is the one above the right one? Neither had a wife of 'Emma', as bguser says. The IGI entries are member submitted and not from the Parish Registers - so are even more suspect than the transcriptions, which should always be checked against the originals (and no, I don't do this very often!).

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for looking Samuel up, however it's difficult to prove if it is the right one.
The three children I have information about are not listed and it seems likely that they were working away from home.
Also as Andrew Mead points out the wife is not named Emma, though it is possible that she has died and Samuel has re-married in the meantime. Unfortunately, I have no date of marriage for either Samuel & Emma or Samuel & Sarah.
The only information I have is from the IGI and anecdotal accounts from family members. I accept that the IGI has its limitations but find it hard to believe that with three family members each born two years apart the name of the mother would be incorrectly recorded three times.
It's also possible that it Emma & Sarah may be the same person in that she might be Emma Sarah Rossiter and has taken to using her 2nd christian name.
Looks like I'll have to dig up some more information that makes the family easier to identify. Thanks again for all your efforts. They are much appreciated.

Eliza was my great grandmother, and I have also found it difficult to track her down. I have spoken to my aunt about her and she confirms the well-born story and also that she was born in Cheltenham. She was used to going to balls and had servants but after she married Alfred she was reduced to dressmaking for others. Alfred George Davis was born on 26 September 1848 at 3 Callow Hill Street, St Pauls, Bristol, parents Thomas Davis and Agnes, nee Court. I think she is unlikely to have been the 15 year old servant in the 1871 census. I would like to trace her marriage to Alfred.
In the Gordon Beavington 1851 census transcription we have
DAVIS Thomas 47 House painter, Bristol St Pauls
Agness 33 Waistcoat maker, Wootton Courtney
Elizabeth 12 Bristol St Pauls
Thomas 6 Scholar Bristol St Pauls
Selina 4 Bristol St Pauls
Alfred 2 Bristol St Pauls
I still can't find Eliza's birth or marriage records, but I do now have her death certificate. I spoke to my aunt who told me that Eliza had died of flu in 1918 at the time of the armistice, and the certificate confirms this. She died on 7th November 1918, aged 62, at 25 Albert Street, Greenbank Road, Easton, Bristol. Cause of death Acute pneumonia 7 days. The death was registered by her daughter Selina (Mrs S M Walker.

1861 census now available. There is an Eliza age 5, born Cheltenham with her parents Samuel & Emma. Let me know if you still need the details. Also have this Samuel in 1841 with his family.
I have Eliza and family in 1861, but would like the 1841 census details, please.
Many thanks,
Jude.
I now have a copy of Eliza's baptism on May 11, 1856, at St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol, parents Samuel and Emma. I still cannot find a birth registration for her although her brother and sisters seem to have been registered. I sent for her sister Emma's birth certificate, born Oct 5, 1852, and this gives her mother's maiden name as Gay. I have now sent for Samuel and Emma's marriage certificate in the hope of gradually teasing out more snippets of information. Emma's parents were George and Mary Gay and I have also found them in 1841 living at New Street, St P and J. George and Mary are both 50 and they have a daughter Eliza aged 15 and Emma who is 13. Slow progress, but it is progress nonetheless!
