Hi
Mygreat grandfather was killed on the main line at Darlington, in 1896. He was walking along the line at night when he was hit by a train from Saltburn.
As this was classed as a minor event, and even though he was a railway employee, and even though a coronor's hearing took place, i can only find a transcript of the write up in the local paper Northern echo.

I am curious as his death cert says he was tresspassing on the line? but he was walking to work.

there is little info at york rail museam

any help?

I presume this is John Robinson Furness? I have found the report from the Northern Echo dated Jan 30 1896 under the heading 'Bank Top Fatality'. If you don't have access to the Gale Group newspaper database via your library and want a download of the actual cutting rather than a transcript, send me a PM.

If he worked for the railway there may well be something in his service records at Kew.

Hi there,
I'm not sure which write-up you've seen but the newspaper report describes your relative as having said (to his wife) that he was 'going along the line that night and not going by the fields, as they were so dirty'. It was the railway police inspector who said he was trespassing, so presumably his normal route to work would have been through the fields and it would have been against the rules to walk down the lines. Is a slightly gruesome report.

Sorry, I had replied before I saw your Introduce Yourself message and realised you were new to the forum. PM stands for Private Message (click on a person's user name to send a private message) which is useful when you want to give someone your e-mail address without it appearing on the open forum.

thanks Sue - it makes interesting reading

Is anyone from darlington? Maidenvale cottages is near the A66 outside town i believe it is a poultry farm.
My relative john robertson furness(furniss?)worked on the railway, so how did he have a farmers cottage? was it a farm in 1896?

1901 census finds my grandmother in Hartlepool.

After his death a tree was drawn up and was spirited away by a relative from Darlington.

Years later 1976,a relative died in hull, and a tree was traced by solicitors.

john furness was born kirby stephen in 1854, anyone doing this branch of furness?
