On a Grave at the Old Parish Churchyard, Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland:

`Also in Memory of Sara M Robertson, M.B.,Ch.B.,
Wife of William McDougall, M.B.,Ch.B.,
Who died at Christmas Island 7th June 1907.`

She is buried at Christmas Island in the European Graveyard and shown as aged 30. Her husband William MacDougall died at Carr Bridge, Invernessshire in 1916 age 43.

If anyone can identify the family of this person I`d be very interested as she appears on a Russell Family Grave of mine so there must be some connection.

Searching "Sara Maude Robertson" and "Sara M Robertson" (with quote marks) on Google Books returns some results having to do with Glasgow University, Glasgow Medical Journal & British Medical Journal.

Doesn't help find her family, but does put her in Scotland 1895 - 1900.

Yes Procat, apologies for duplicating, but as I don`t seem to have much info it seemed relevant to list the info available under `strays` as well, means as she was born in Scotland and died in Christmas Island.

Thanks.

The British Medical Registers state Sara Maude Robertson Registered on 07 Apr 1900 having qualified from Glasgow University in 1899 as MB & Bac Surg. Her address in the 1903 & 1907 directories is given as Craig Terrace, Blackridge, Linlithgowshire. My James Robertson was born in Linlithgowshire so this gets more interesting.
I presume her husband is the one Registered on 18 Sep 1901 from Edinburgh University in 1901 as MB & Bac Surg. His address is given as Rothes Morayshire.

A friend who knows a little of my Family History has just produced the answer.
My ancestor William Notman Russell was involved in a rescue of a child, who had fallen through ice at Carron Dams Larbert on 12 Feb 1890.
Having just reread the associated newspaper articles, the child is not named, but its a girl aged 13, the daughter of Mr Robertson, Supervisor, Inland Revenue.
On the 1891 census Sarah Robertson is a 14 year old, the daughter of John Robertson, a, to quote ancestry ` Superviesor Excise Civil Sevr`. So not only do we know the family link, but we now know the name of the child that my ancestor saved in 1890. And hence his decision to commemorate her on the family Gravestone.
Amazing.

Thanks for all your help

A young lady worth saving - look what she made of her life - he must have been very proud to be part of it.

What a great story.
