--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi

I have just had the good fortune to obtain from a relative a scanned image of a discharge note for an ancestor of mine Private William Miller No 323 dating from 1872.

My question is can anyone tell me about the 1st battallion regiment of foot between 1858 when he joined as a 15 year old to 1872 when he was discharged in Chichester. It says that he also served abroad in the East Indies and that he obtained on medal. On the form it also says that his attended place of residence after discharge was 5 Chadwick Street Maddington Square Islington London. I was hoping to find maybe one of his family there but sadly after doing an address search on the 1871 census on findmypast no such address comes up.

Is it possible to find any other info regarding him. He has been one of my brickwalls for a very long time and this is my first breakthrough. Any ideas would be very welcome.

Thanks

If your chap's battalion was involved in any foregin expeditions/incidents; you may find record of them in the London Gazette.

Is this chap a direct ancestor? - If so, do you have a marriage certificate for him which should hopefully provide you with his dad's name and occupation.

Islington/Clerkenwell has a ChadWELL Street between St.John Street and MYDDELton Square. Could this be what you're after?
At number 5 in 1871 (schedule no. is 315) are John B. & Charlotte FOOTE or FOOLKS - difficult to read! - Joseph & Eliza RICHARDS and the SAUNDERS family.
In 1881 it appears to be occupied by the EVANS and PERRY families.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all your help. Yes he is a direct ancestor and I do have his marriage certificate which but unfortunatley I still cannot find him or his family on the 1851 census. The first time he turns up is 1881, as he was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (thanks for the link for that) between 1858 - 1872, and it appears was mainly in India.
I can't find a correct birth entry either.
I visited the Royal Warwickshire Museum yesterday, and although it was very interesting it seems the next stop is Kew!!

His name was William Miller born 1844 St Pancras father George occupation on William's marriage cert looks like "Brewer" but it is not very clear.

If anyone can find anything I would be extremely grateful!
