Hi,
Have you tried contacting the Record office, either Liverpool or Lancaster, to see if they have the prison records for that period? I have a distant relative who was in prison in Glouceter in 1851 and they were able to send me copies of his Admission record - he stole a tablecloth for goodness sake!

I'd try Liverpool first, rather than Lancaster. This link might be useful, although I am not sure whether it refers to Walton or Kirkdale: http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/dserve.exe?&dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=21&dsqSearch=((text)='gaol')
You can check the catologue online. Just use Kirkdale as a search term - it brings up about 62 pages. http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Local_history_and_heritage/index.asp (http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Local_history_and_heritage/index.asp)

Walter Calderbank appeared in Wigan County Police Court with Edward Lawrenson in Nov. 1880 and was committed for trial at Liverpool assizes. A third man, Seth Jolly, gave evidence against them. The three had broken into a pub and helped themselves to spirits and food before making off with a decanter of brandy. You can find the initial hearing in the Liverpool Mercury Nov. 26th 1880 (search Walter Calderbank) and the trial report in the Liverpool Mercury 5th Feb. 1881 (search Liverpool Assizes) listed under burglaries.
Sounds like they had quite a party! |biggrin|
