I'm finding out, by bits and pieces, a little more of my gg grandfather Ludwig HOFFMANN.
From family stories I learned that he left Germany/Prussia to avoid military service (when?); from one marriage certificate, that his father was also Ludwig and a millwright; From a census, that he was born around 1834 in Birkenfeld, Oldenburg (it's a start)...
I also have learned that he was married at least three times: 1st to a Frances (?) from Hull; 2nd, in 1872, to my gg grandmother Thirza BURTON (from Welton le Wold, Lincs) and, after the tragedy of loosing her and two of his three children, in the space of a month, to disease be married 3 rdly, in 1878, Mary Elizabeth BACKUS from Hull, with whom he had 3 more children.
They didn't stay in Sculcoats, but eventually went to Canada and elsewhere.
1- I'd be interested in finding out when he married Frances and what her maiden name was (I've found a few things on BMD but not yet that). I don't know of any children and she would have died, I think, in 1871, as Ludwig was a Widower when he married Thirza.
2- I'd be interested in knowing if Ludwig might have a connection with any of the other HOFFMANNS in the area.
Anyone else out there searching this?
