View Full Version : Anybody help me
I have posted a rather battered copy of a photo of my grandfather Charles Firth. I have tried to find the uniform on the net but have had no joy. Several family member's say granddad Charles was in the Royal Artillery/ horse artillery. About 1916 all say he was a gunner. He didn't stay long in this regiment has he moved to the RFC. that story I will place in the correct forum.
My grandfather had two medals that we now of British war medal and the victory medal. This search has been made harder due to the selfishness of one family member who will not share.

Looking at the photo, although it isn't an ideal picture for identifying the regiment, the cap badges do look like the Royal Artillery.

Many of the medals had the persons name indented on the edge. Often they were given out well after the event, a letter or card with more full details on issue and exactly to whom. With an army number of this letter it may make your search easier.

Hi,
If you want to give me further information on Charles eg. DOB, place of birth and middle name etc. I would be happy to check the First World War service and medal records for any further details.
Have you checked the National Archives website because they have RFC service records etc.
Regards
Adrian

Thank-you to all who replied to my post.
I only have a photo of my grandfathers medals and thats only the back and I am lucky to have these. I have a cousin who guards what family photo and all my grandfathers ww1 and ww2 medals. He will not let any family see these not even my grandfathers children. What make this worse is he isn't even a Firth. As you can Imagen this hasn't gone down well. There are four children left two have dementia even this will not get him to part with what he holds.
I do have the dates for grandfathers birthday its 15th September 1900 birth place Bradford Yorkshire. There is no middle name. I am in regular contact with the all my grandfather children so any question you may need to ask. please feel free to ask.
thank-you for your help, and the the photo is wonderful thank-you again. I will be passed this on to family members

How about you print off a glossy copy of the picture and give it to your cousin and tell him you'll let him have copies of any others you get to add to his collection.I'd leave it at that for the moment - softly, softly, catchee monkey.

Hi Roz,
I'm afraid I couldn't find any service records or further information on Charles.

I have just received another photo but don't I think it going to be of much help
I have also emailed family asking if there are any more of my granddad army photos. Its such a shame these are so badly damaged. Maybe I will have to go to London sometime look at the National Roll Of The Great War see if he was put in there.
Thanks for all your help you have been so kind
