View Full Version : John Hargreaves (born Stoke on Trent, circa 1803)
Please could anyone help me to find any information about John Hargreaves born about 1803. I can find him on the 1851 census and also have details of his marriage to Rachael 0akes on 1.9.1828 witnessed by Thomas Bailey and James Partington. He was born in Stoke on Trent.

I cannot help directly - but in your shoes I would be trying two places:
Non-conformist records which are available online via the pay-per-view site 'TheGenealogist'
Staffordshire Record Office at Stafford for the parish registers of Stoke on Trent. Registers which record baptisms, banns, marriages and burials are the basic source for tracing families prior to the start of civil registration in 1837.

Have you tried the Parish Records on microfiche at Biddulph Library? I too have ancestors called Hargreaves in the area, but mainly in South Cheshire.
I have the book of marriages at Biddulph Parish Church which gives the details you mention.
Sorry I can't help any further,
Regards, Kathleen.

Thank you for your help. I think I shall try to visit the records 0ffice in Stafford, I have never been to a Records 0ffice before so I'm sure I shall find it interesting.
They are fascinating places; some suggestions to consider:
1. Have a look at what is recorded on their web-site - it will help you to get a feel of where things are and what you might order to look at when you first arrive.
2. When you first get to a record office, take half an hour or so just to wander around and look at what there is and where to find it.
3. Before you go, list out on a sheet of paper what you are trying to locate. After each 'target' leave some space to record what you have checked and the result. It is really easy to become side-tracked. Leave space on the sheet to add things which you see and take your eye when you first look around the record office.
A little planning makes sure that you make best use of your valuable time. If you get stuck, don't be nervous about asking the staff for help - it's what they are paid to do and these days most are really helpful.
Good luck.

I have a number of Hargreaves. Although they lived at Norton, Burslem areas, I have a couple of references to Biddulph, including marriage there. My Hargreaves married into Buckley, Bourne, Ball, Bailey and Hulme families. Are any of those names familiar?
My earliest Hargreaves is Henry (?-C1738), his son Francis, (1715-1802), his son William (1747-1834), and his son Thomas (1778-1864)after that I've got quite a few more.
Welcome to the world of the past, where we go forward by going backward!
Sandra with the spectacled aura.
Hi Sandra,
None of the names are familiar to me but I am only back to 1803 and my Hargreaves were from Biddulph so maybe I shall find a connection - thank you for your welcome!
