On May 22nd 1804 a baby boy was christened at St Mary Lambeth, and given the name Alfred. The cleric remembered the child's name, but before the register could be filled in, everyone seems to have left the church and gone home. All he could write was as follows:-

Alfred, the parties went away

Has anyone else come across this kind of thing?

Yes. It's not uncommon in busy metropolitan parishes.

I guess his parents weren't members of the congregation.........

No, they can't have been recognized and they certainly didn't know the procedure. Perhaps Alfred was howling and they had to remove him?

It's such a contrast to outlying parishes (say in Northumberland) where you practically get a biography of the parents. Sometimes they almost give the grandparents' shoe sizes!

I wish mine came from Northumberland!
