I should have a mother and three children travelling together, 1868-1869
Surname is Cohen (could be listed as Cohn, Kohn, Cohan, Kahan)
Mother is Anna - age about 30 (Channe, Hanne)
Abraham/Abram - age 10-12
Lena/Lene/Lela - age 6-8
Wolf or William - age 3-6
They were Russian, but probably would have listed Germany, Poland or Russia-Poland as their origin.
Thanks in advance.

I tried searching at this site http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp
but didn't find anything much. Any immigrant going through NY should be in their database. Try it and see :)

Hello Jason - have you checked the Castle Garden (http://www.castlegarden.org/) website? There are a number of Cohens on there - have a rummage to see if any of them are yours. :)

Sorry, but I haven't found an appropriate group for them in the NY or Boston passenger lists. I also tried Castle Garden, but there are no good matches for age, and it's very hard to see how immigrants are grouped on that site.
Do you have the year of immigration from the 1900 census? Could they have immigrated through Canada? Can you be sure they all travelled together? Sometimes one parent arrived with a couple of older children, and the others followed later. Just a few thoughts.

Edit. Warning it's long, make a cup of tea first.

1900 census reports father (Levi Cohen) came in 1867, mother (Anna Cohen) in 1869. The 3 children reported 1867-1870 in various censuses, with the consensus being 1868, but of course their memories were provided by their parents, and depending on which parent they asked they would get a different answer! Based on the fact a child was born in the USA in Oct 1870, and they had 4 children in the next 5 years, my guess is they reunited in late 1869, and it probabaly didnt take Anna long to get pregnant. If I had to choose one year, it would be 1869.

Sorry, I still can't find them on the digitised New York lists.
If no-one else can find them, you could try tackling it from the other end and go through the Hamburg passenger lists. These are also on Ancestry. There are handwritten indexes for the period you want, browsable but not yet searchable. I've had a go at this but it's quite tricky and takes some commitment, because you have to toggle between the indexes and the volumes themselves, converting the page numbers to image numbers as you go. Of course they're in German too ;)
Your best bet might be to go to a library with Ancestry access when you have plenty of time to spare and have a try for yourself? I know for a fact that positive results are achievable, given time :)
