Thought I would take the plunge and dive straight in to the murky waters of the BG Forum!!!

I've only been doing research since last September, and have been studying genealogy at my local adult eduacation centre since then. So far, I've relied on the census and the IGI for information, as birth, marriage and death certificates cost a small fortune.

The names that I am interested in are, Mounsey (from Workington in Cumberland), Potts (same place), Longcake (ditto), Marshall (Ruston Parva in Yorkshire), Tipping (Toxteth Park in Liverpool), Lezart (ditto Tipping) and Potts (they migrated to Toxteth Park!).

I found on the family search website that John Mounsey married Isabella Cape in 1804 (22 November). His age is given as 38, and her age is given as 34. I then googled John Mounsey Mariner and found the Cumberland and Westmorland Parish registers. On this register it says that John was a Mariner (I knew from the 1841 census), that he was a widow at the time of this marriage, and that he and Isabella got married by licence.

My genealogy tutor very kindly pointed out that sometimes men would say that they were widowed, apply for a licence, get married very quickly, whilst, actually their 'dead' wife was still alive!!!

There is an entry in the parish register for 1795 that says: Jonathon Mouncy - husbandman (what's this?) p.Distington (census says that he was born in Clifton, is this near Distington?) m = Betty Folder = 12 June 1785.

Do I have a bigamist in my family? How do I check for sure?

I probably haven't done this properly, it's all a bit scary!!!

Hello Hippy Dippy and welcome to Brit-Gen |wave|

Please do not be scared - the forum is huge but there are plenty of people here to look after you. If you post something in the wrong place, then a Moderator can move it for you. |hug|

Have a look at the Cumbria (Cumberland) forum (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=79) and perhaps post details of your query there, as this forum is just for introducing yourself to the rest of the gang. If you get lost, just come back here and ask for directions. Someone will point the way.

Meanwhile, our Spring Competition (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43202) will help you find your way round. Have a go!

But, above all else, remember to enjoy yourself!

Hippy Dippy. I can give you a brief answer now, ref Tipping and Lezart. I found your request on yasni.com where I have a permanent search for Lezart. Joseph Lezart was a master mariner, my GG grandfather I think, I may one G too many! He was of Maltese extract, son of Joseph and Mary.

I am still too busy to look through notes but this following reference will help. Come back to me if it fails. Type in Google or Yahoo, "family tree of Matt Bird" Matt lives in Essex and this may show the right path from dozens of other Birds. The family tree covers Lezart and Tipping, Murdoch and Leftwich.

He has a forum that you can ask questions in. I found the Lezart family left Malta in the 1800's and I believe went by ship to Canada. My theory is they were French speakers, search of graveyards show no intermarriage with the Maltese nor in main graveyards of Malta. You will find a Lezart in California, New York, and lots in Quebec. various versions of the Lezart name, Lizee, Lizard etc. Best I have found it was a wealthy family from Provence.

I have found no Lezart in the UK unless ex directory. Here in Indonesia I don't have a credit card to pay for use of sites so we are much the same in relying on free information.

When you have found what you want, please get back to me on this forum or E mail. Thanks
