Thought I would take the plunge and dive straight in to the murky waters of the BG Forum!!!
I've only been doing research since last September, and have been studying genealogy at my local adult eduacation centre since then. So far, I've relied on the census and the IGI for information, as birth, marriage and death certificates cost a small fortune.
The names that I am interested in are, Mounsey (from Workington in Cumberland), Potts (same place), Longcake (ditto), Marshall (Ruston Parva in Yorkshire), Tipping (Toxteth Park in Liverpool), Lezart (ditto Tipping) and Potts (they migrated to Toxteth Park!).
I found on the family search website that John Mounsey married Isabella Cape in 1804 (22 November). His age is given as 38, and her age is given as 34. I then googled John Mounsey Mariner and found the Cumberland and Westmorland Parish registers. On this register it says that John was a Mariner (I knew from the 1841 census), that he was a widow at the time of this marriage, and that he and Isabella got married by licence.
My genealogy tutor very kindly pointed out that sometimes men would say that they were widowed, apply for a licence, get married very quickly, whilst, actually their 'dead' wife was still alive!!!
There is an entry in the parish register for 1795 that says: Jonathon Mouncy - husbandman (what's this?) p.Distington (census says that he was born in Clifton, is this near Distington?) m = Betty Folder = 12 June 1785.
Do I have a bigamist in my family? How do I check for sure?
I probably haven't done this properly, it's all a bit scary!!!
