One of my ancestors was living at the Mackworth Arms pub, 158 Commercial Road, London St George in East when the 1911 census was taken. He was living with a Meyer family, amongst others, and I have verified this through the London Pubs and Trade Directory.
Is there anyone who would have any information about that particular public house or any connections with it at a similar time. I'm still trying to find out more about my family or the people they would have known. My ancestor was called William James Hammant, potman and Barman.

Thank you.

Hello Alison,

Have you see the entry for the Mackworth Arms on the Dead Pubs website (http://deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/StGeorgeEast/MackworthArms.shtml)? Scroll down - there's a photograph. ;)

Thanks Jan.....Yes I have seen that picture before...it's great:D

What I really want now is someone that knows something about it and the people that worked there.....nearly 100 years ago!!!!???

My Great Grandfather appeared to be working for a German family. I do not know London at all...so any useless snippet of information about this place would be a huge help in building a picture of my ancestors life.

Thank you so much:)

Another thought....

Although not specific to the pub, the book East End Past (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=viewproduct&cat=&id=P86390&pageOffset=0) could provide a flavour of the the life and times of people in the area.

Thanks Jan:D You are a mine of information!

Does the East of London Family History Society have a website I can contact them on?

Many thanks

I've just quickly found a defunct pubs/breweries site and The Mackworth Arms was run by Watney Combe Reid &Co Ltd - Stag Brewery, Pimlico and Mortlake Brewery. It is no longer in existence...how would I contact archive in that case.....?
