Local army regiments

Hi, My Grandfather served in ww2. He came from Birkenhead.
Does anyone know any details of the local army regiments at that time. I am trying to research his family and think this would be a good way to try.

A couple of web sites which might help you are the Army Museum at http://www.national-army-museum.ac.uk/ and the Imperial War Museum at http://www.iwm.org.uk/ The latter has a section on family history research with downloadable files. :)
