I have a sub to Ancestry and looking through the Census I am finding pieces missing. A freind in Australia who has the 1841 was looking up a partiular piece only to tell me it was missing.

My question is, how do I find out what pieces are missing from the different census before buying them, I would hate to pay out all that money only to find the piece I want is missing.

Regards

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I don't think you can find out which pieces are missing by a numerical search but you can search by place.
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp
click search
enter Dunmow as place, 1851, HO107
If you read the details after the piece number you will see that it says 'missing'. As you will see from the different entries some of the small villages surrounding Dunmow are also missing.
Subsequent years may be recorded differently.
enter Gautby, 1861, RG9
click on parish Gautby
click on 'full details' tab
scroll down to bottom of 'summary box'.
Last line says note - missing.

Also I would have thought that, if you asked, any census producer worth their salt would confirm that a certain place was on a CD before you purchased it.
