I am doing some research on James Barnes who emmigrated to Empangeni South Africa KwaZulu-Natal Province from the Uk in 1900. He worked as a police seargant and had a son Joel James born 1910, he also lost a daughter when she was 2 years old. James was deported in 1930 due to apartheid.
DOB.
If anyone has any info I would be very grateful.
Thanks for lookng

Hi - not sure from your message whether you have already checked the immigration/emmigration passenger lists? The only one I can see coming in from South Africa at about the time you mention is a James E Barnes aged 61on the 7th May 1925 but that is probably too early. Do you have his date of birth?

there are several J Barnes emigrating to South Africa between 1899 and 1901. Unfortunately no first names are given.
In 1900:
Departure: 27 October 1900 Southampton to Durban. J. Barnes, a single Book-keeper aged 30. Name of ship: Arundel Castle

Departure: 28 February 1900 London to Cape. J.C. Barnes, a single Commercial Traveller aged 26. Name of ship: WAKANUI

there were 4 in 1899 and a further 2 in 1901.

Hi Sue,
Thank you ever so much for taking the trouble to look, no I hadn't checked the passenger lists as I wouldn't know where to look. I don't have James' DOB so I know this isn't going to be easy. 1925 would be too early but I'm going to keep what you have given me as a possibility. Where do I find the passenger lists?

Thanks Again
Tracy

Welcome to the B-G forums

The Outward Passenger Lists held by The National Archives (Document class BT27 from 1890-1960) have been digitized and put online on the pay-per-view web-site 'findmypast'.

Earlier outward lists tend to contain less detail than those from the 1920's onwards.

Hi Nicolina I have since found out that James Barnes emigrated in 1899. If it's not too much trouble can you give me the 4 names for that year on the passenger list?
Kind Regards
Tracy

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply once again Elaine. The James I am looking for wasn't married so that only leaves the one. Brilliant.
Many, many thanks.

it's annoying that they don't give "last residence" isn't it?
