I've just been told that apparently my great grandfather, Arthur Bernard Clements, died in Wandsworth Prison where he was serving time for Manslaughter.

I've managed to find his death on the registers, in Q3 1937, age 46.

The first question is, the death is registered in Camberwell (where they lived) and not Wandsworth. Is/was it usual practice for (presumably) the family to register the death and not the prison? I'm assuming that if I obtain a copy of the cert it would say place of death as the prison (assuming the story is true).

Secondly, I've tried searching the Times archive and the London Gazette and so far I can't find any record of his trial (working on the assumption that something like manslaughter would have been covered). I've found that the records for Wandsworth prison are only available from the LMA which unfortunately I can't get to. Is there anywhere else that anyone can suggest where I might be able to find any more information. At this point I don't actually know if it is true.

I've also posted about him in Brickwalls as I'm having trouble tracking down any info on him. I can't pin down his birth or find him on any census docs so far.

If anyone is able to help Jane with this black sheep, please could you post your replies on her other thread (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43441&page=2). ;)

Thank you,
