The job sort

Saying "sadly" (implying sadness for whom exactly? clearly not the employer) you have not been successful this time and we wish you facile best wishes in your search.

All that is childish in me (and that's most of me) wants to write back saying I'm much too good for their stinky old job anyway and yah boo sucks |moon|

Well, at least it is a reply.

Apparently, 60% of potential employers never even bother to let their applicants know the result.

I know rejection letters are horrible I have a few in my time, but at least they had the courtesy to let you know, the biggest moan I hear is that employers dont let your know one way or the other. Its their loss anyway| you deserve betterhug|

Thankyou everyone |hug| - and yes I do often see in job ads words to the effect that only successful candidates will be contacted, and anyone who has not heard from the Almighty - woops I meant HR - within 4 weeks should assume their application has not been successful. That pees me off even more... it's sheer laziness and lack of courtesy. After all how long does it actually take to draft a mailmerge letter or an email and send it to all the unsuccessful applicants?

I'm now feeling quite kindly towards the person who sent me the rejection I received earlier :D

hi all,

I know just how anyone who is reading this who is out of work feels, I am also not working at the moment. I have sent off over 30 applications with only two thanks but no thanks letters, that is until today I have received an invitation to an interview next week. Fingers crossed as I think I could do this really well.

Love Sue

I understand completely. |hug| I've been searching since December last year and have been through this at various times in my life.

I went for an interview a couple of weeks ago. I felt very positive about it but I wasn't shortlisted. So, determined I wouldn't collapse into a soggy heap again, this time I emailed and, thanking them for their time and the opportunity of an interview, I asked them politely for feedback and any suggestions that could help when applying elsewhere. I had no idea whether I'd get a reply or not and put it to the back of my mind as best I could. You know what it's like...you wonder about all sorts of reasons why you weren't chosen.

I did get a reply that told me...

With regards to your enquiry for feedback from your interview, you came cross very well at interview and my decision was made purely down to the candidates that I put forward having more experience in a similar role. As you can imagine at the moment due to the economic climate we are inundated with applications for any positions advertised and this one was no exception.

Asking for feedback after interviews helps you to find closure on that particular job. If there's no reply it might mean the company isn't that caring or professional anyway. It's important to view any feedback or decision with an open mind and not to take any of it personally - they don't really know you nor do you know them.

It's desperation that makes the situation worse. The key is to get busy with all those things you would have liked to do when you were working...preferably the ones that don't cost a penny...like I said, I know exactly what you mean.

You're welcome to pm me.

I'm about to be made redundant after 20 years working in the same company - it is scary and daunting thinking about having to look for work again. I'm looking to find a position that will fit around the children and school hours, and now find that I need you need qualifications and work experience for everything now!

I'm looking foward to having the easter and summer holidays with the children, having the time to work in the garden on the organic veg, with the chickens! And spending rainy days in the library/archives while the kids are at school!

Good luck to everyone in the same situation!

I hope your library has online access too...not only is it brilliant for renewing library books/asking them to hold them for you, but there's all sorts you can find online through it. Really useful if you'd planned to go there but the children are off sick!

I'm writing a book that I've been promising for...goodness I can't remember how long.

There are free courses online too - most of them to do with IT or basic skills. You never know, perhaps someone will need an LSA with those skills.

You could always start by offering to talk to children about your family history... :)

I'm lining up some vountary Teaching Assistant work, and planning to start NVQ in september ( now need NVQ qualification to be a teaching assistant!) However, I can't start the voluntary work until CRB check has been done.

You even need to have experience, and references and also go for an interview to get on a one year teacher training course now!

Our local library has just set up a family history group, meeting one morning a month - so that's something else I can do until I start voluntary work!

Yes trying to work in schools is very different than it used to be. Eight years ago I applied for my old LSA job (7 years worth) within one month of leaving but they decided to take on someone new with up to date written qualifications.

I've just come back from a job interview. Was a bit disconcerting when, at the end, one of three (eek!) interviewers started saying that he likes to ring people to let them know the results rather than either send a letter or leave them hanging for ever AND would I mind if I did receive a rejection phone call! Talk about finishing the thing on a negative note. I, in turn, said if so would they mind if I asked them for feedback. I did notice a slight wobble on the gentleman's lips as he replied.

They had planned the interview well. The job involves speaking to people who might be highly stressed or have issues about things. It was easy to see that the lovely receptionist who 'befriended' me while I was waiting and immediately started talking about herself was taking mental notes about my reactions and responses to her.

Anyway, I'm drinking tea and thinking about family history now. Much nicer. |hug|

I always feel that a phone call can be positive as you can ask sublementary questions and put them on the spot, they won't have chance to conconct an answer. I would also make the point about him being negative and that this is not very professional, mind if they do offer you the job, perhaps this can wait until after the end of your induction period.|jumphappy

I had a job inerview about 20 yrs ago where the employer interviewed 2 candidates at the same time with no forwarning! He asked both us the same questions - how rude and awkward! I was offered the position but refused it saying I thought his methods of interviewing were dehumanizing and I simply couldn't work for someone who felt that way about people! Made me feel good :D

Definately! One of the questions they asked was "Why do you think we should choose you?" Do you think they're all related to Alan Sugar?

Way to go Vanessa!!

That is extremely rude... 2 of you at once!|moon|

It is amazing the people who are applying for jobs at the moment. We own a landscaping business and are currently hiring for the upcoming season...
Besides the quota of people who DO NOT read the advertisement correctly and apply anyway we have had an unbelievable number of applicants with other qualifications, including a geophyicist, several welder/fitters and a set designer for the movie industry. Some of the applicants live a day's drive away...with no mention of plans to re-locate.:D

A note to those of you looking for employment. If applying by email, make sure you use a program where the attachment with your resume is easily opened. We have received some resumes that no matter what we do, we cannot open them. When getting alot of mail in a day, those resumes are lost in the shuffle unless we can contact the sender to have them re-sent.

Good luck to all of you who are out there searching....

Sue

Well, I made someone's day today. Interviewed her at 09:00am (and she had turned up 10 minutes early) and offered her the job by 09:30. She starts next Monday. :D

If she is as good as she appears on paper - plus what a bit of behind the scenes research uncovered - both she and I will get along fine.

Fingers crossed that all turns out well for all of you who are job-hunting. :)
