Here is another competition folks, and once again there is a great prize.

All you have to do is read the Acceptable Use Policy which appears on a banner above all the main forums, and then read through the "Sticky" threads which appear at the top of various forums, marked with a drawing pin symbol (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/images/misc/sticky.gif). Of course you will have read these already (;)) but might want to refresh your memory. Some answers might also appear on the British-Genealogy Resource Pages.

Then answer the 20 questions below and send me a Private Message with your answers (to send a private message, click on my User Name). Do not post your answers on this thread!

The closing date is midnight GMT on 31 March, although I promise there is no significance to the answers being posted on April Fools Day :D.

The prize is a CD compiled by One Stop Genealogy (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D10492&supplier=&breadcrumb=Family+History+Reference+Books+and+CDs% 3AFamily+History+Reference+CDs+by+Supplier:One+Sto p+Genealogy) of useful genealogy websites. The winner can choose whether they wish to receive England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales.

As a tiebreaker, please nominate an ordinary B-G thread that you have found which you think deserves "sticky" status. This should contain useful information to all but not mention commercial sites or contain lots of chatter. Highlight and copy the URL of the thread and post it in your Private Message below the answers.

OK, Here are the questions.

1. Discussion of which three subjects are not allowed on B-G, except where in direct relevance to your family history research?

2. Why do the moderators remove or close duplicate threads?

3. Name two places on the British-Genealogy Forums site where there is a direct clickable link to http://www.british-genealogy.com/ and the Resource Pages.

4. What was the date of the 1871 census?

5. In what year was the father's abode and occupation added to baptisms in the parish registers of England and Wales?

6. What is another name for Hundreds (a subdivision of a County) which you might find in old records?

7. To which genealogical site does the Sticky on Chapman Codes refer you (via a clickable link) to find a complete listing?

8. Which two sticky threads in the Useful Information and Tips Forum have been rated with five stars?

9. On which Forum would you find a sticky by Geoffers on how to use the National Archives website?

10. You are looking for a Black Sheep named Richard HACKLE. When you find him, what was his sentence for assault on 28th February 1849?

11. In what respect can the IGI be regarded as 100% accurate?

12. In what year did the Wesleyan, United, Primitive and Irish Methodist Churches unite to form the Methodist Church?

13. Using the on-line Database of Clergy, find the date of ordination of Thomas KAYLEY.

14. What are the National Archives catalogue reference numbers for Army Certificates of Service and Army Discharge Papers?

15. How old was Joseph BIRTLEY when he was killed in a mining disaster in 1889?

16. What was the occupation of William GATHERCOLE before he became a photographer, and which year did he die?

17. What is the new address of the Irish General Register Office?

18. What are the dates of the two Statistical Accounts for Scotland which are available on line?

19. When did registration of births, marriages and deaths begin in Queensland?

20. When did Canada cease to be a British Colony?

Here's a clue that might either help make Friday 13th lucky for you or give you something to do over the weekend.

I looked first at the AUP and the Resource Pages. When I compiled the other questions I opened up all the chevrons on the forum home page (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/index.php?) and opened each forum in turn looking for stickies at the top.

I didn't bother mixing up the questions afterwards, so they should all still be in sequence :D. Once you have read all the important stickies you should have found the answers!

Simple! Quite apart from the great prize, there is some very useful information in those stickies for those researching their family tree - and that's all of us isn't it? ;)

|woohoo| First entry has come in. Come on folks, you only have till the end of the month and you know you don't want to watch rugby all weekend :D

The entry contained the following quotes:

Hi Sue, Thought I'd give it a go. Did come across some information that I previously had no cause to search for - but that was the purpose, wasn't it :D

Quite!

Re “tiebreaker”.
Can’t nominate a thread that doesn’t already have “sticky” status, but wouldn’t it be useful to have a thread that contained shortcuts to.........

I have obviously left out the details, but this seems like a good idea if you can't think of a specific thread that you would like 'stuck' but have some information you are constantly trying to find and would like to have as a sticky. You can even nominate a website (as long as it's not pay per view or commercial). The idea is that we will add to the useful stickies after the competition as a benefit to all - so everyone will be a winner if a lot of people enter.

One week and three hours left. There's nothing on telly tonight, and you won't need three hours (unless you get sidetracked by the sites some of the stickies lead you to :)) so you could get it done and dusted a whole week early! :D

The weekend stretches before you and, in Britain at least, the weather forecast is not up to much. (Tuh!)

So, get comfy and have a rootle round the boards to find the answers to the quiz. It is really great fun and you will be amazed at what you can find out. :D

Here are the answers to the competition. There were quite a few all correct, so the winner will be announced tomorrow when I have discussed the tiebreaker with the Moderators. Of course everyone who entered is a winner because they had fun and learned a lot ;)

1. Discussion of which three subjects are not allowed on B-G, except where in direct relevance to your family history research?

Politics, war, religion

2. Why do the moderators remove or close duplicate threads?

Duplicates clutter the boards and cause confusion

3. Name two places on the British-Genealogy Forums site where there is a direct clickable link to http://www.british-genealogy.com/ and the Resource Pages.

The two places I was thinking of were the British-Genealogy.com clickable link on the blue banner at the foot of every single page, and the 'Forum' listed under the Family History banner entitled 'British-Genealogy Help Pages' which is in fact a clickable link rather than an actual forum. I think everyone got one of these, but no-one got both. However, I also accepted all the other clickable links you found, especially the one from the second post of the AUP, which showed it had been read thoroughly :D

4. What was the date of the 1871 census?

2/3 April

5. In what year was the father's abode and occupation added to baptisms in the parish registers of England and Wales?

1813

6. What is another name for Hundreds (a subdivision of a County) which you might find in old records?

Wapentakes

7. To which genealogical site does the Sticky on Chapman Codes refer you (via a clickable link) to find a complete listing?

GENUKI

8. Which two sticky threads in the Useful Information and Tips Forum have been rated with five stars?

Tips for Google Searching
How to Use Photobucket

9. On which Forum would you find a sticky by Geoffers on how to use the National Archives website?

Useful Online Sources

10. You are looking for a Black Sheep named Richard HACKLE. When you find him, what was his sentence for assault on 28th February 1849?

1 month in prison or £1:10 fine

11. In what respect can the IGI be regarded as 100% accurate?

As an index of the ordinances (baptism, sealing & endowment) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

12. In what year did the Wesleyan, United, Primitive and Irish Methodist Churches unite to form the Methodist Church?

1932

13. Using the on-line Database of Clergy, find the date of ordination of Thomas KAYLEY.

19 September 1708

14. What are the National Archives catalogue reference numbers for Army Certificates of Service and Army Discharge Papers?

WO121 Army Certificates of Service
WO97 Army Discharge Papers

15. How old was Joseph BIRTLEY when he was killed in a mining disaster in 1889?

Seven

16. What was the occupation of William GATHERCOLE before he became a photographer, and which year did he die?

Shooting salon manager. 1912.

17. What is the new address of the Irish General Register Office?

3rd Floor, Block 7, Irish Life Centre, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1

18. What are the dates of the two Statistical Accounts for Scotland which are available on line?

1791-99 and 1834-45

19. When did registration of births, marriages and deaths begin in Queensland?

1856

20. When did Canada cease to be a British Colony?

1867

Many congratulations Michael. Great idea. :)
Though you could have expanded your sticky idea to include similar stickies in other countries. Unless google or multimap are the only options for those overseas places.
I sometimes want to find where an overseas place is, and find I usually have to resort to typing the placename into google, and then looking at the town's website - which is mainly less than helpful in giving me the answer I want. |sad1|

Fair point, Ladykis, but I was thinking more in terms of the fact that some of our British ancestors and their siblings did emigrate, and that if there was, say a NZ equivalent of streetmap, it could prove a very useful link. Though, reversely (for want of a better word!) I suppose we're lucky just to find that person x emigrated on ship y, and finding them in BMDs in Australia and New Zealand or the census in the US and Canada is like the cherry on the cake.

I have already got that actually, but as I bought it over 4 years ago, and it's currently packed away awaiting removal to a new home when (if) the decorating (ever :)) gets finished, I confess I'd forgotten about it. (Hangs head in shame)
Seems as if there's at least two or three more helpful possibilities worldwide map-wise for ye olde days on this page.
