Please could anyone help me to trace any information about Peter Davenport. He was the father of Joseph Davenport who was born in 1803 in Middlewich, Cheshire and died in 1870. Joseph married Mary. I have been trying for ages to find out more about Peter. |banghead|Thank you

Batch No.: M089951
Dates: 1751 - 1812
Source Call No.: 0990251

Printout Call No.: 6906841
I could not see a christening for him in Middlewich, though.

The records for Middlewich (http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/middlewich.html) are at the Cheshire Records Office (http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/Recordoffice/visiting/recoffvisit.htm). It might be worth paying them a visit and working outwards by parish.
Also, a check of the Marriage Banns might throw some light on where Peter came from.
Good luck!

Hello Lucky,
There is a marriage on the IGI for a Peter Davenport and Phebe Bratt at Middlewich in 1873 which could be him, it is an extracted record so a good place to start.
No bapt, but that could be that those records haven't been done yet.
Take a look here
http://www.familysearch
You can order the Middlewich films at your local LDS family history library to find out more, whereabouts are you in Staffs? They will help you with the readers and are able to point you in the right direction for further info.
The film you may need is this one which will cover the time frame approx
990251 Item3
Hope this helps

Lucky, if you need me to check that marriage for you - shout NOW! I am definitely hogging the Prestbury PRs this Friday at Manchester Library, and would be happy to include your little couple in my search.
ETA: The more so as that Bratt lady may even be one of mine!

Hi MythicalMarian, if you would check the marriage of Peter Davenport and Phoebe Bratt I would be so pleased. The marriage was 8.7.1793 but not sure it is my Peter Davenport. Any help very much appreciated.

I'll see what I can do for you, Lucky. I have to warn you though, the name Davenport is legion in Cheshire, as that is precisely the county of its origin! You are also talking about a family that was established in the region in the 11th century, hence a huge number at any given time.
Just to give me a bit more background - is there anything else you know about your Peter? His date of death? Any children? Is he on a census?
But at least the marriage is after the Hardwicke Act of 1753, so we should get more than the basic 'Peter Davenport and Phoebe Bratt were married this day'.
I'll report my findings tomorrow evening for you.

Hi Mythical Marian,
Unfortunately I do not have any dates for Peter Davenport. The only things I know are that he had a son named Joseph who was born in Kinderton? Middlewich in 1803 and died 1870. Thank you so much for trying to help me.

I'll do what I can, Lucky. By the way - I see that in my original post offering to look this up for you I mentioned Prestbury. Senior moment - I was thinking about a marriage I have to check in Prestbury when I answered. Of course I'll be looking up Middlewich for you :)
I've had a scout on A* to just trace your Joseph and Mary a bit on censuses for background, and see he lived in Tatton. His daughter Phoebe may be a link to this marriage between Peter and Phoebe - so fingers crossed. I don't know whether you have found a possible marriage for this Joseph, but I can tell you that if he was living in Tatton, the parish you need could well be Rostherne. If I have time I'll have a gander there too - although I can't promise that at this visit today.
I'll report back later...

Hi, Lucky - I'm back with your marriage. I didn't have time to do much hunting for Peter himself, I'm afraid, as I got very bogged down with my Clarks. However, Middlewich seems to be more of a Bratt parish than a Davenport one, so it may be that Peter just married Phoebe there because it was her home parish.
OK - here are the details:
Middlewich, St. Michael and All Angels
Banns of marriage between Peter Davenport and Phoebe Bratt were published June 23rd, 30th and July 7th,
The said Peter Davenport of this parish, husbandman, and Phoebe Bratt of this parish, spinster, were married in this church after Banns this eighth day of July in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety three by me Joshua Powell, Vicar.
Peter Davenport (signed)
Phoebe Bratt (marked)
Witnesses: John Davenport (signed) and Wm. Chesworth (signed) - neither of whom seem to be professional witnesses, so they are no doubt linked to the couple.
Hope this helps. I'll keep it in mind for my next visit.
