I am looking for the Phipps family. My gggrandfather Mathew Wise Phipps esq., b 1828 in Emberton, Buckinghamshire. He married Sarah Howes, b 1826 in Northampton, Northamptonshire and they had 8 children, one being John Wise Phipps my ggrandfather who emigrated to Manitoba Canada in 1883. Three of the children were born in Switzerland btn 1866-1873. The family appears on the 1851 census in Northampton and again in 1881 census in Teddington, Oxfordshire. He is listed as living on private means. The only information I have is Mathew's father's name was John W Phipps, gentleman. Any information on this family or where to search would be appreciated.

According to the Northamptonshire Marriage Index 1837-60, Matthias Wise PHIPPS, of Rugby, bachelor, of full age, Esquire, father John, Esquire married Sarah HOWES, of the parish, Abington Street, spinster, of full age, father Thomas, Attorney on 22 June 1852 at Northampton St Giles. Of course, the Matthias could be a mistranscription for Matthew. However, he is proving extremely elusive in both the 1841/185 census records. I have him in the 1861 census of Northampton, the 1881 census of Headington, Oxfordshire and the family are back in Northants in the 1891 census:

RG12/1188, folio 24, page 2
Rose and Crown, Pattishall

Matthew Wise PHIPPS Head M 62 Living on own means Bucks Emberton
Sarah do Wife M 64 Northampton
Jane WEBSTER Cook S 35 Domestic Servant Northants Pattishall
Emma Matilda ROBINSON Maid S 19 Maid Servant do Grimscote
Emily Laura PHIPPS Daur S 17 Switzerland

Matthew and parents must have left Emberton by the time of the 1841 census, as I cannot find them in Emberton in that census. Neither can I find Matthew in Rugby in the 1851 census.

I think your best bet is to consult the parish registers of Emberton where you should hopefully find the baptism of Matthew and maybe details of his parent's marriage if you are lucky, either the actual record or perhaps the banns. The LDS have microfilmed the parish registers of Emberton 1658-1931 and you can hire them to view in situ at your nearest LDS Family History Centre. You can find where that is from the search facility on the Home page of Family Search website.
