I am really unsure where is the best place for this post. But here goes.

My mother always told me that her father was a bigamist, he married my grandmother and then ran back to Ireland to his wife & children as soon as my grandmother announced she was pregnant.

How can I find out anything about this man. (I will never call him grandfather – he doesn’t deserve the name)

He & my grandmother married in June 1937 at the Catholic Church of St George in Harrow Road Wembley. His name is Richard John Casey, age given as 27 & father is Daniel Casey, farmer. One of the witnesses to the marriage is N Casey (a relative?).

My mother was born almost nine months to the day after this wedding but which time Richard Casey was long gone.

Hi Joanna,

Are you sure that Richard was not born in England rather than Ireland (though his family were Irish)? Have you tried to find out who his first wife was?

If he really was a bigamist then it might be that he lied about details such as his father's name so as to disguise what he was doing, and he might have told your gran other untruths too so on your hunt don't take anything as certain.

What was his job? Any chance of finding him in a trade directory?

IF his father Daniel is listed as deceased on the marriage certificate then have you found any likely deaths for him?

Best of luck
Paula

Hi Paula,

I have no idea where Richard Casey was born. I hadn't actually considered that he could be born in England. I'll see what I can find. Here's hoping that Casey isn't too common a name.

His father is not recorded as desceased. He is a farmer

Richard's occupation is Barman (I think that's what it says) does this mean working in a pub just like a barman today?

The fact that the witness was another Casey makes me think it is the correct name - otherwise s/he would have to be in on the deceipt.

I have no definate proof of bigamy only my Mum & Gran's word for it. Unfortunately my Grandmother died over 35 years ago and of course my Mum only knows what her mum told her.

I'll keep looking.

Regards
