I am hoping someone is able to show me how to obtain details of names of officers of the 18th Royal Irish.
I am trying to trace details of my Great Grandfather Capt. Samuel Henry BRYAN and his father a Col. BRYAN.
Samuel Henry BRYAN lived between 1831 and 1887 and I believe at one stage he was stationed in India.
Although, I know some of the history of the 18th Royal Irish, I do not know how to ascertain details about personnel archives; plus it does not help e living abroad.

The majority of army records are held by The National Archives (TNA) at Kew.
This research guide tells you about tracing British Army Officers' Records 1660-1913 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=13)
Promotions and mentions in despatches will appear in the London Gazette (http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/)
(Don't search on too much detail).
The Army List is a farily quick way of tracing the service of an officer - copies may be purchased from The Parish Chest (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/www.parishchest.com)and some pay-per-view sites such as TheGenealogist have some army lists available. Depending on where you are in the world (you don't mention so it's difficult to offer suggestions), you may find partial runs of the Army list in a large reference library or recrod centre.

Hello Geoffers
I have a feeling I shall have to wait until my wife and I are back in the UK on holiday, possibly next year or the year after, so we can go to the National Archives to do any further research. We live in Central Andalucia in Spain.
It appears all the Army records are on microfiche.
At this moment in time all I need is proof that the names exist within Army records and then later I can obtain hard copies for my records.
There are times when I wish all records were as easily available as the Census records.
Regards
Richard

The London Gazette may help as a starting point, being searchable online.
What do you have at the moment to connect your research to Samuel Henry BRYAN, showing him to be a Captain in the Royal Irish Regiment?
e.g. Is this shown in his marriage certificate, or birth certificate of his child(ren)?
Does your chap appear in any census returns with his family? If so, where and when? - Also if childnre are shown with him, where and when were they born? (Are they all places where army personnel were posted?).
