Hi,
l have found an Ann Goddard in the 1841 census shown as an inn keeper at High Street, Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire. ln 1851, she is again shown as an inn keeper at Market Place,Wisbech St. Peter, Cambs. How do l go about finding out what was the name of the Inn that she ran.
Thanks very much,
Valman.

Have you tried Historical directories?
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp
Can't look myself at present as their search engine appears to be having a hissy fit!

Looking at the image of the 1841 Census it says the Rose and Crown Inn. The 1851 image doesn't give a name.

Hi Emeltee,
Thank you so much l couldn't decipher it online, but lve now found the history of the Rose & Crown and she is even mentioned as a" most spirited lady" who also ran the local omnibus service.
These forums are absolutely brilliant for solving problems
Thanks so much,
Valman.

Perhaps you know this already, but the Rose & Crown in Wisbech (as it's known now) is owned by Elgood's Brewery of North Brink, Wisbech. Although they started brewing later than 1851, they could well have records which may help you.
Also, the last time I was in Wisbech (about 8 years ago)there was a clothes shop named Goddard's within a couple of minutes' walk of the Rose and Crown. The shop has been there a long time and could possibly have connections with you ancestor.
This is all probably unconnected, but hope it helps a little.
Good luck
