I searched the probate calendar for a will for Thomas Wilks Lord who died in 1870 and found nothing. He seemed to live a fairly well to do life style so I thought he probably would have left a will. I then went to Find My Past and found him on the Death Duty Index. It states his residence as Harrogate, in the court column is written "not proved" nothing in the register column, and 799 is shown in the folio column. His widow Fanny Lord died in 1886 and I found her also on the index in 1887. Her entry shows her residence as Broughty Ferry, court as PR, register as w, folio 833. Written on the left side just above her name is what looks like OF 10209. What does the OF 10209 indicate?
Would there be a Death Duty register for Thomas? If so how would I go about finding it and requesting a copy. Appreciate any help

It would appear his will may have been disputed - you may have to search the probate calendar for several years after 1870 to find when probate was granted. Similarly, you may have to trawl the Death Duty index for several years to find a reference to him.

The Death Duty registers are held at TNA in Document class IR26 (the index you have searched is from IR27) - searching their catalogue shows that the Death Duty registers for 1870 are in these files (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?fldResultMarker=21&fldSearchNumber=195711&SearchInit=1)

For 1887 they are in these files (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?fldResultMarker=41&fldSearchNumber=195828&SearchInit=1)

You may be able to order a copy of the register entry from TNA (for a fee)using the reference in the index.

This TNA research guide tells you about
Death Duty Records (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=107)

How to interpret Death Duty Registers (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=245)

On findmypast - when you get to the page to search the indices, you will see an underlined link 'Death Duty Registers' which will give you some more information.

Thanks for your help. I tried your links but I get message "Specified instance reference BO search 195711 does not exist, please try again." I'm probably doing or not doing something right. Thanks again

No idea what the fault is with the link.

Using The Catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp)

In the word or phrase field enter an asterisk - *
In the year range, enter the same year in each field (e..g 1870-1870)
In the department or series code, enter - IR26

Thank you for your instructions. I have such a hard time finding things on their site, you made it really easy. I searched the DDI for 5 more years and didn't find anything else for Thomas. Do you think there would be anything in the folio (799)referenced in 1870?

With a 'not proved' you may possibly find some information as to why not; but not much else.

You may have to search the Death Duty Index for several years after 1870 to see if there is another entry showing when probate was granted. Note down all the details in an entry and you may be able nto obtain a copy of the the death duty register from IR26. For the sort of information included in the Death Duty Register, see the reseach guides that I provided links to, above.
