Has anyone paid for membership to this? Just curious as I was thinking it may help but a little uncertain.

Looking at the site it only offers the 1881 which is available free on the LDS site and GRO indexes, other than that it seems they will give you advice, articles, etc. For a one off fee you 'may' get value for money, depends on how many index searches you do really.
The 1837 com offers the GRO indexes for a fee, currently £15 buys 194 units, or you can wait for FreeBMD to be complete and pay nothing. Personally I use FreeBMD as a guide then check it on the actual GRO index later at the FRC or library, but pay to search for those not yet indexed I want to find.
The best site for all those starting out is Genuki, see
http://www.genuki.org.uk/index.html
and for beginners
http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html
I would suggest you look at what Family History Societies have to offer, they may well have publications covering the places/times you are interested in.

In my opinion the search prices are very steep. Six quid for a one-year search of the GRO Index  You could search 1837online for 15 years for that price.
And whatever you do, don't order a BMD certificate through them - their prices are virtually double what you'd pay if ordering direct from the GRO.
I don't think that they can offer much more than you can find out for yourself from Genuki, Cyndislist, google, Familysearch, FreeBMD, Ancestry, etc. If they were volunteering to go to Kew to look at various records it would be a bargain, but until then, no thanks.

I went to 1837online last night and found that as an added bonus they've begun to add the 1861 census - only limited coverage at the moment, but you can view original images and transcripts.

Thanks for all your opinions. It was mainly for the indexes, impatience for ones not on freebmd yet! Think I will just wait.
