Does anyone know whether there is a possibility of some Hampstead Birth and Marriage records being missing, around 1860-1871.

The reason I ask is because I am having problems finding my Gran's Birth index and my Grandfather's third marriage.

With many thanks, Maureen.

Have you checked surrounding areas? Have you looked at the original images of the BMD and also checked for possible misspellings? If you provide some names then I'll have a look for you.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Yes I have done extensive research for the two indexes, using variants of name etc, and different districts. The reason I am thinking of Hampstead is because my Great Grandfather had a job in Hampstead and lived there till he died. All his children were registered in the Hampstead district - they were all born at home. However, with regards to my Gran, she was born in 1862 in Hampstead (according to her marriage and death certificates). When she became of pensionable age no one could find her birth certificate, despite a lot of research and neither can I now.

Her name is Mary Ann Nobles and her father George Nobles. Because George was married three times (the wives kept dying sadly) there might seem to be a short period when she could have been born out of wedlock when her birth would have been registered in her birth mother's name.

As for George's third marriage index - I cannot find this either. I do know that his second wife died in 1868 and that he went on to have a number of children after 1871, the first was born in 1872, to his wife Mary Jane Sandilands. She was still single on the 1871 census. All the documents I have show that she was the wife of George so I am pretty sure they did get married around the 1871-2 dates. As she was Scottish I have even perused Scotlands People but cannot find anything.

I have tried all manner of different ways of entering my searches - using several wellknown sites - I don't wish to give up - but sometimes feel like it!!! If you are able to put a fresh approach onto the subject, I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks, Maureen.

Maureen,

There are two later births for Mary Ann Nobles: Sept 1872 St Saviour and Dec 1876 Whitechapel.

Maybe worth checking - if you have not already done so.

Jenni :)

Until the 1870's there was a degree of failing to register births; the extent of under-registration varied between districts. You mught just be unlucky - but do try variant spellings of the name.

Marriages should be included, again try variant spellings - are you certain that they married? - Not everyone was married who claimed to be.

Thank you Jenni and Geoffers. The dob I fear is much too late but thank you anyway. Of course, as regards the marriage, there might not have been any wedding but I have gained the impression that he was quite honourable having married both of his former wives. He went on to have a great number of children with the last and I have no reason to suppose he did not marry her.

Thank you both anyway, Maureen.

You said his third wife was called Mary Jane Sandilands... Have you tried looking for different surnames and perhaps only Mary or Jane as the forename? She may have married before and so have married George under a different name. Also, there may be variant spellings such as Sandyland(s), Sanderland or Sunderland(s), even possibly Summerland.

Alternatively, perhaps her registration slipped through the cracks, so you could try local churches and such. Also, George's will if he left one may prove whether they really married or not, and of course they may have married after the birth of their first child, or even after several. You could also try churches for your grandmother's christening.

Thank you for your suggestions. I must admit I have been looking under various first names and surnames with no luck but haven't thought they might have married later on. I will have to check this out. Mary Jane Sandilands was entered as single in the 1871 census and I have followed her way back to her birth but as you say a lot can happen in a ten year period. I have used Church records in the past to find another branch of my tree to great effect. I cannot find any CD parish records for Hampstead on Parish Chest but I believe they may be kept at LMA. I understand that A....are shortly going to put these online which will be a boon.

Many thanks, Maureen.
