Hello all,

I have just received the marriage certificate for my ggrandfather Frederick Morton to a lady called Ann Smith. Address on the certificate states Four Lane Ends for the groom and Derbyshire Lane for the Bride.
Brides father is William Smith - a gardener.
Grooms mother is listed as Selina Morton.
The mystery is that on Fred's birth certificate his parents are Matthew and Ann Morton. On his 2nd marriage certificate his father is George Morton(deceased). Where does Selina come into it? Can anyone find Selina on the 1861 census for that area? Fred's first marriage was in 1866. He was born in Idle near Bradford in1846. Hope this makes sense!
Thanks

Hi

Four Lane Ends is in Yorkshire. I just search old-maps.co.uk and found it at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldmaps/index_external.jsp?easting=413503&northing=433500&countyCode=40

Maybe Derbyshire Lane is near there?

According to my Sheffield A-Z Four Lane Ends appears to be a crossing of Derbyshire Lane. although since it is on the middle fold of the book it is difficult to tell. It would appear to be in Norton Lees, part of the extensive ancient parish of Norton which was in Derbyshire until Sheffield extended its boundaries. Large areas of North Derbyshire to the south of the city were annexed during the early part of the twentieth century, and especially after the end of War2. I would not like to hazard a guess as to where the exact boundary lies.

It sounds to me as if you've got certificates for more than one Frederick Morton. One has parents Matthew and Ann, the other George and Selina. How are you sure that you have the right birth or marriage certificates? Do you recognise the names of the witnesses, does his age agree on all of them? Maybe the 2 marriages are the same man as there's no real conflict between them but you could check to see if there are any other possible marriages in Free BMD.

Hello Genie,

I'm confused. Do the certs you have say Derbyshire or Yorkshire?

Have you had a look on the 1871 census? I see a Frederick age 25 born in "Edel" Yorks, with wife Ann.

And there's a George Morton 51, b. in Derbyshire, wife Hannah 48 (could be Ann?), living in Idle, Yorks. Has in-laws named Woodhouse.

Best,

Peggy

Hello Christine,
Yes, I am coming to that decision myself. I have now established beyond doubt that the Fred that was born in Norton is mine. I started again in 1901 and re-traced him back to 1871. The other Fred was definitely born in Idle. I will post details of the certificates relating to the other Fred in different places and see if I can help someone out.
Thanks for your interest in this puzzle.

Hello Peggy,

I too was very confused but I now have it sorted. My Fred was born in Norton,Derbyshire. I have now found him on the 1871 census living in Norton with his wife Ann and baby daughter Florence.
