View Full Version : FAIREY family, Riseley & Yelden Beds

I would be very interested to hear from any descendants of the Fairey family of Riseley Beds from 1788 -1901 and possibly later.
The original family was William and Mary Fairey who married in 1788. I have traced the children and grandchildren of William & Mary to 1901.
Names associated with the first generation include Wildman, Rootham, Deighton, Gell, Sams, Cooper, Mitchell, Young.
From <1810> the family scattered and can be found in Yelden Beds and various places in Hunts. Thereafter in Canada, Australia, India and many counties in England.
I would be interested in putting some flesh on the bones of my ancestors with family stories, reminiscences and perhaps exchange of photographs.

Kia Ora Mandy66!
Another cuzzy has pointed out to me that I may not have seen your message and I have not! Merry Christmas and welcome to our select band of Faireys!
William & Mary had 8 children and I have descendants on my mailing list of 6 out of the 8 and that includes another descendant of George and Elizabeth! My direct descent is from son William bap 1793 who left Riseley about 1815/16.
Do you want to "talk" to all your other rellies? Some are in England and the rest in Australia or like me in New Zealand!
We'd love to share our family history!
Regards

Anyone is welcome to join in anytime! Unfortunately I haven't got beyond William Fairy's marriage in 1788 - YET! And I have no idea of the location you mention!
Is that one of yours? I have about a dozen people in my Fairey/Fairy/Farey circle who are researching their family trees - particularly like me from the Colonies! Everyone is stuck around the 1750-1800 era. If you are interested please let me know.

Shefford(Campton) and Broome are two villages about a mile and a bit apart southwest of Bedford and about 8-10 miles from Risely. No connection, I just noticed the entry whilst flicking through the parish register.
Found this list of Bedford Methodists.
'The names, numbers, occupations, residences etc., of the members of the Society in the Bedfordshire Circuit'.
1781 - 1799
St Neots Class. John FAREY (or FAIREY). Married. Tailor of St Neots
St Neots Class. Ann FAIRY. Married. Mantua maker of St Neots
Hargrave Class. Pet(er) FAIREY. Labourer of Covendon (not listed after 1783)
Bowbrickel Class. Rach(el) FAIRY. Married. Dairy woman (later lace dealer) of
Daney's, Sheep Lane.

NOW you are talking my language! We had a deep suspicion that some of them had joined the Wesleyans , they certainly had children baptised in the Baptist Church at Spaldwick, so it seems there was a non conformist inclination.
Dare I ask if any of the following names to whom the Faireys married) are in your list:-
William & Elizabeth GELL Riseley 1796-1850s
John & Mary Ann COOPER Riseley 1804- 1890s
Susannah & William Wildman 1791- 1850s
Any other resources which might help me unearth these elusive Fairey/Farey/Fairys ?
I am very grateful for the gems you have passed on!
Just had an earthquake - bit spooky !!
Cheers

Aren't you the greatest? Thank you so much. Some of the info I already had but not the Yelden stuff so I'll put that away carefully and follow it up. It is very obvious as you folllow the Faireys that, if they moved, they always went where Faireys had been before!!
Do you actually visit the Bedford Library? If you are going again I have 3 specific questions if I can stretch your generosity!
1. If William Fairey who married in 1788 to Mary Cooper was from, say , Hunts would he have needed resettlement papers? And if so do they have copies of resettlement papers from Riseley? In explanation the Riseley fiche says that he was 22 and his abode was Buckden (Hunts) at the time he applied for a marriage licence.
If you can ascertain the answers to those 2 questions I can then get copies hopefully. In 1841 William is still alive and says he was NOT born in Beds.
2. I am seeking the deaths of Joseph & Ann Fairey/Farey from Yelden. They were there from the birth of a child in 1826 through the 1841,1851 & 1861 censuses. I have both on the 1861 census and then they disappear! Ann possibly died Spt Qtr 1870 Bedford 3b/215 from the Free BMD but I can find no trace of Joseph. (There is another Joseph & Ann Fairey at Covington so I know to be careful!)
Their eldest son Amos also disappears after the 1861 census. Amos's widow & some of their children are together on the 1871 census in Yelden.
So my presumption is that Joseph, Ann and Amos all died between 1861 and 1871 in Yelden??
Whatever, I am very very grateful to you for the additional info you have given me and thank you so very much for your generosity in keeping the circle of assistance going. I try very hard to chase up people who emigrated here (although their families are often doubtful!) in return. Someone must 'own' the 770,000 odd people who lived here in 1901!!!
Thanks again

I did drop into the library today, but couldn't get near the fiche readers so couldn't check out your specific questions. I shall probably pop in again next week and hopefully things might be quieter.
Your Fairy's seem a truculent lot, Nathaniel FAREY a weaver of Dean was hauled up before the High Sherrifs Assizes as a religious dissenter on no less than 7 occasions between 1678 and 1685, and Susan FAREY a widow of Carlton once in the winter of 1668. From an Index of Dissenters.
Moving a bit further up to date I saw some Farey 1914-18 War accounts,
This is from a book - National Roll of the Great War Vol V. Luton.
Put me in a library and I'm like a kid in a sweet shop. :-)

Oh wow every time we have an earthquake you come up trumps Dave! (Another at 6.30 this morning!) I love the idea that Nathaniel (whom I haven't proved a relationship to yet) was,as we would say, a stirrer! Knew I inherited it from somewhere!
I am so envious of you being able to pop into the library and track such gems! Our history only goes back to 1840 apart from some hardy whalers and even harder missionaries!
I'll be spending the evening trying to identify the soldiers Fairey and Farey so think of me! I'll be most grateful if you are able to answer my questions anytime!!
Kind regards

Just an update.
Sorry for the delay, I've not been able to get into town till yesterday.
Q1. Resettlement papers for William ... the very helpful librarian spent 20mins rummaging without success, apparently anything on those lines would have been transfered to the Bedford & Luton Record Office. I will have to go there in the near future for some of my own stuff if you can bear to wait.
Q2. Deaths of Joseph & Ann .. I managed to grab a viewer for a few minutes and checked 61 & 62 before I was ejected by the lady who had booked it :-) I'm back there next Thursday to finish the job.

Dave I have never enjoyed earthquakes but this am we had another -5.2 on the Richter scale enough to set of the warning system on Mt Ruapehu a volcano almost on my doorstep! With a crater lake about to empty directly into our river!
PLEASE let me know when you are going to reply again and I'll spend the day under the bed!
I am trying to get my head around various bits! Do you normally go to the Bedfordshire Library and the archives are kept at the Record Office?
William Farey's marriage was by Banns and the Librarian (in an email received today) seems to think that means he wouldn't have needed resettlement papers. So I am completely mystified as to what the procedure was. Apart from the Fareys you gave me earlier I can find no references to any earlier Fareys in Riseley. The only other clue is that a William & Mary Farey (spelling?) were expelled from Bolnhurst back to Godmanchester in 1768. NOW if they had a son William born c. 1760s I might be on to something! William might have been born in Godmanchester early in the 1760s, his parents then moved to Bolnhust, got removed and later William headed back to Riseley to get married. ??????????? A scenario like that would satisfy all the information I have on him.
Incidentally an English "cuzzie" had written to the Beds Library seeking the info and passed the message on to me so I am not duplicating your efforts on my behalf! I am most appreciative and look forward to hearing any news you might be able to give me whenever you have time.
Kind regards
Marlene

Don't know if you are collecting FAIREY generally, but there was Thomas 66, and widowed sister Susannah 68, in Sewardstone, (Waltham Abbey) in 1861, both born in Buckden, Hunts, together with a granddaughter Emily STURGES, 5. (From Deptford)

The Faireys are on my shoulder! Thank you so much for the lead. I have just received the info about Thomas, Susannah and their family from the Hunts Family History Society and the birth years match perfectly with their baptisms!
Off to have a look at the site you mention

Sorry for the delay, I've been a poorly dumpling recently.
This could be your missing Joseph from the BMD fiches
Deaths
Joseph FAIREY Sept 1864 Bedford 3b 181
The only other dead Josephs I found were Sheffield and Newport Pagnell.
still no sign of Amos, although some of the pre 1866 handwritten pages are pretty inscrutable, he may be hiding there.
