My great grandfather Emanuel Smith accompanied his brother Henry's family to Philadelphia Pennsylvania looking for a better life in 1889. I am assuming brother Henry went earlier, although I haven't found him yet on a shipping list. Shortly after arrival a child Edith SMITH was born in 1890. I don't know where in Pennsylvania she was born. My g grandfather returns from PA within 9 months of arriving, and is in the 1891 census. His brother Henry and family are not in the 1891 UK census. At some stage in the 1890s, the family returns to England - back to the same little mining town in Yorkshire, minus the father Henry, who I believe died in the USA.

My question however, is about Edith Smith's birth in 1890. How do I go about searching for it? All I know is she was born in Pennsylvania in 1890. I have nothing else to go on. I have no idea if there are any indexes I can look up like there are in the UK.

Hmmm, it looked OK at first, except apparently I am not allowed to order online if it is for genealogy purposes, and I must enter the day and month as well as the year of birth, plus a county. Except I don't know the day or month or county. I am coming into this with little information and was hoping for a general search... perhaps it doesn't exist.

Without knowing the county this site (http://www.pagenweb.org/) may not be much use, but it has a lot of PA information on it. Also, the 1890 US Census was all but destroyed by fire, only tiny fragments remain, nothing for PA unfortunately.
