I am slowly working on my family genealogy and have traced it to approximately 1716 when Christopher Scagel/Scaggel/Schagel arrived in Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire. He was born about 1695 and in 1719 he married Deborah Wallis in New Hampshire. I have just found a question on an old website forum from 3 years ago by someone doing a search and he said he had heard that Christopher came from Cornwell for a few generations. I have been unable to find this questioner and thought I would post on the B-G forum to see if anyone has any information and can help me. Nancy Scagel

Lanlivery

Frances SCADGELL dau of Abraham & Frances, 20th. August, 1693.
Abraham SCAGELL son of Abraham, 25th. December, 1696.

If you are interested, I have some more with a similar surname baptised in Falmouth in the early 1700s.Thank you for your reply. Are you in this family or did you find this from another source? I guess I am wondering where you narrowed it down from. Is Falmouth in Cornwell? Nancy

Hi,
Just a quick reply to help clarify the location of Falmouth. Yes, it is a port in Cornwall, UK.
Lanlivery, where the baptisms mentioned by Bo Peep were located, is also in Cornwall.
A lot of Cornish people emigrated to various parts of the world - usually to work in the mining industry.
Do you know what Christopher did as an occupation?

Mark

That may tie in with a Falmouth family - as I mentioned, Falmouth is a port on the South coast of Cornwall.
Do you have any clues as to where in Cornwall your ancestors came from? With it being so long ago, I suspect any record probably says simply Cornwall, UK or similar.
It is not a surname which I would associate with Cornwall, but there was one Scadgell family in Cornwall in 1851 at Phillack. The head of the household was George Scadgell who was born in South Moulton, which is not in Cornwall, but Devon.

No other families with similar surnames exist in the 1841 to 1891 censuses for Cornwall - but of course you are looking much earlier than that.
Bo Peep has a lot of information on earlier records and the names she mentioned may possibly be connected to your Christopher. A possible useful lead would be if the names Frances or Abraham occur in any descendants of Christopher - which *may* indicate a link to the family Bo Peep mentioned.

It will prove quite tricky to trace the family with any certainty I suspect - but it will be an interesting challenge!
