My brick wall is ggf Henry who blew himself up at Dearham colliery aged 28/29 depending on the source. Death cert, marriage cert, and all census returns point to mid 1861 to Feb 1863 birth because little brother James was born Nov 1863. However I have purchased every birth cert for Cockermouth in this gap and James and Mary (Railton) are not listed as parents. 1861 census has them married, living with her parents but no Henry so I assume she did not bring him as a wedding present. Has anybody any ideas as to why I can't find Henry in the birth records?

Was Henry his "real" name or was he just called that?
For example, I had an uncle Harry, and it was only recently that i discovered that his real name was Henry. Harry was the name of my grandparent's first child, who died aged only a few months.
Alternatively, was Henry his second forename?

Henry Graham 1871 Census 9 years of age Born Dearham. Parents as per your posting plus other children.
Have you looked at the full GRO index (usually held in your nearest reasonably large Library) or just the free bmd's on line which are not yet complete.I would be happy to send you the image of the census return but I would need your email address.

Thank you Audrey and John.

I had downloaded 1837online so was fairly sure that I had covered all the dates but I will check at Carlisle to see if they have any additions to the online copy. I transcribe for freeBMD so I know 1863 is missing.
I'm fairly sure that Henry was his name as his paternal grandad was a Henry but you got me thinking. One has to asume somethings are right so I've assumed Cockermouth registry and at least one of his names was Henry or the possibilities are endless. There are no harry's but there is a James Henry (James was maternal grandpa) so I'll send for that with the usual caveats and hope again.
Thanks again

John,

can I say a huge thankyou? I followed your advice and found old Henry masquerading as James Henry! This kind of confused me as next sibling is James but the parents are exactly right. Anyway, I now have the birth cert and can start again.
