View Full Version : In 2 places on the same census?
Hi,
Has it been known to happen that the instructions were ignored, and someone was listed in 2 households? If so, was it a very rare thing?
This question came up in connection with my "Who was Betsy Whiting" query in the Birmingham forum. Betsy shows up in the Ladywood household of my ancestress in 1891, and I'm trying to trace her back. But the best match/most likely candidate I find in 1871 and 1881 is listed with her family, in Handsworth, in 1891.
Thanks,
Peggy

To save anyone asnwering here, I have responded to the message on the Birmingham forum.
The basic answer is, yes - it did happen.

I just wanted to say that my Edward FRESHWATER was aboard ship S.S. Elephant in Durham on the 1881, but his wife put him down as being at home with her in Greenwich.
The classic is the Census of 2001, when my Son-in-Law was driving across the Country on an eight hour stint ..... my daughter put him down as being at home with her, because she knows how much her Mum moans when I can't find someone in a census.
She told me she thought she'd save someone some hassle in 100 years time! :D

Hi Diane,
I wonder if some women felt it didn't "look quite right" to be listed as married but not list a husband? What a name for someone on a ship - - - he must have had to put up with constant jokes.
Love the story about your son-in-law!
Best,
Peggy
