Could anyone tell me where I may obtain a marriage certificate for 6th May 1798. James Walton m Sarah Wright at St. Mary`s. Gateshead.

You won't find any "certificates" for BMD's before 1837 when Civil Registration began. The main records before this date are in the Parish Records. Many of these can be read at your local LDS centre.

You could always contact Durham County Council Records Office and ask what the procedure is to obtain a copy of the marriage entry. Your particular marriage is on Microfilm M42/146 Ref: EP/GaSM1/25. It would be a photocopy of the entry but it would show your relatives actual signatures.
