I was about to send you to ScotlandsPeople for John's birth certificate, but they only have images of birth certs online until 1908... I don't suppose he had older siblings? You'll have to wait until 1910 for John's. Anybody visiting new Register House in Edinburgh can look it up, though. Marriages are online until 1933 so you only have to wait until next year for that. Again, someone visiting NRH can look them up.

You can buy copies of certs that are too young to be on line (this is all in one of the stickies at the top of this forum), or get a researcher to go in and look (Scots Origins do a lookup service). Since you're in the UK, it might be easier to treat yourself to a day a NRH....

Since we're talking about 20th century records, if anybody can help, please remember that it is not allowed to post information about (possibly) living people on the forum. Any such help should be sent via the PM facility. For this reason, I shall remove the birth year of the daughter.

Whose birth year? John's? If you think it might have been earlier, have a look on SP. You're right up against their cutoff point, so you might be lucky....
I've looked at SP for John Hay born Turriff between 1900-1918. Only one came up - John Hay born 1913. There's also a Robert John Hay (1901) and a William John Hay (born 1900). You could buy a copy of the 1913 certificate online for 10 pounds (it's more if you don't order online) which is cheaper than going to Scotland. You will need to open a SP account - see my sticky at the top of this forum.
I couldn't find the Hay/Gray marriage, which menas it must have happened after 1933.

This is the hard bit. Once you get back to the point where SP has the images on line, it gets MUCH easier.
