After years of searching for my maternal Grandmother, Ellen GREEN nee HARRISON, I have finally found her and her family.
She married in 1903 so until the release of the 1911 Census I had no idea where else to look. I found her last night, with husband and 4 kids BUT her place of birth was given as "Lincolnshire". My mother has always maintained that she was from Yorkshire and that she had a brother George William who died in the war. I found, ages ago, a George William who fit, place of birth Butterwick. Now there is a Butterwick in Yorkshire so I concentrated on that area - nothing.
I had just found out that there was also a Butterwick in Lincolnshire, so I tried searching there and found a possible family in 1881 but there was nothing to confirm it being the right family. A search of the 1891 turned up trumps. It is definitely the right family with Grandma listed as HELLEN born Owston Ferry, Lincolnshire. |jumphappy|jumphappy|jumphappy

Better start sending emails to all the cousins (when I've calmed down a bit)

I nearly said roll on 1921 in my last post but deleted it!
In 1911 my dad's birth mother is in the workhouse with a 2 year old, a two month old and in December that year she gives birth to my father! Her husband is living with his mother in the house they have occupied for 20 years and is employed as a gas meter reader. Her family also live in the town so why aren't they helping her? So sad. No wonder she gave my dad away. Then the two month old dies in June and the 2 year old in 1915. She has another boy to her husband in 1920 (and he disappears off the radar about age 8 - we have a photo). During the war he joined various regiments under different names and he is on her death certificate in 1946 but not at the same address. This is the precis only of this story. Ag labs are beginning to look good.:)

Hi Nicolina
Well done its brilliant when it all falls into place and bingo you've got it. I can only liken the feeling to the Tom and Jerry cartoon when Tom finds out he has got a million pounds and does back flips round the room whooping and yelling.
Yes Finbar its hard to restrain yourself at least at home if I make a breakthrough I can share it with my husband even though he probably isnt that interested. He always manages a "thats good" and I know he means it.

Congratulations, Nicolina!

I love reading success stories! They encourage me to keep searching when my mind tells me it's hopeless!

Apologies! I meant to address the above post to Nicolina, who created the OP. Congratulations Nicolina on your success, and good luck Christina with your search!
Hi Finbar
Like you I am prone to running around, jumping up and down and whooping loudly and that's just because I still can at my age.;)
Had another success yesterday with the fantastic help of Wilkes ml in Kent and AdeleE in Ontario (USA forum) which helps cancel out the six years of frustration trying to find the birth records of my great grandmother and her sister.
Today I must leave this computer and do some chores, I really must. How boring though.

Thanks for all your comments, I really appreciate them.
thankfully I have a husband who is good at housework, taking the dog out and keeping me well supplied with endless cups of black coffee. His lack of interest in family history has it's advantages although at times like this I'd love to have him join in my celebrations.
I still haven't found my Great Grandparents marriage (just after the 1881 Census) but I have now got four GRO references for Grandma's siblings so I'll be spending even more of hubby's money to get the certificates to find out Great Grandma's maiden name.
It always amazes me how one little bit of luck ends up giving me so many new names.
My 88 year old mother is in for one big shock with all this info.
