Can anyone please look for George WANSTALL, born about 1849. He gives his birthplace on later census records as 'charham essex' but I think this is a mistake and that he came from Kent. Possibly Chartham? or any other misspelling. He was 22 on 1871 census and in Lambeth. His father's name was possibly also George. Sheila Thompson

Can't help you with the search as such Sheila, but could it have been CRANHAM, Essex? Just a thought, as the writing is often very difficult to decipher, and r's and h's can be a problem. I've found this a lot doing transcriptions.

Hope this may give you an alternative at least.

Good luck.

Thanks for the thought, Glenys, I have been through the records for Cranham Essex and it isnt there, I am sure it is somewhere in Kent, but think that George Wanstall was a bit devious - or ignorant - about his birthplace and parentage. I have traced him to 1861 census when he was 22, but really need to find him in 1851 when he was probably still with his parents. SheilaT

Hi my namesake! I have Wanstalls in the family too from Blean and Herne in Kent. Are you sure you have the right one because if your George was born around 1849 he wouldn't have been 22 in the 1861 census - more like 12? My rellies all seem to have fairly common christian names which are often repeated, making it hard to pick the right one.
Best of luck, Sheila.

Thanks, Sheila, of course George Wanstall was 12 in 1861, I have the 1871 census record when he was 22, but he was not living with his parents then, so I need the record when he was 12. I found several GWs on the 1837online site, which has records for a few counties, including Kent and London, and I am following up the Georges of around the right age, I got one birth cert and was sure it was the right one, as the unmarried mother died during the birth, which would explain why George was never very sure where or when he was born. But then found the baby died too!
Most of the George Wanstalls born around 1850 are also on all later census records, so I can cross them off the list, as I have all records for my George, 1871 - 1901.
My maziden name was Wanstall, was yours? Sheila Thompson

Hi both Shelia's. I am a proper wally!! When I replied way back when you were looking for the place name, it didn't click that I have Wanstall in my tree.

It was only the other day when a cousin of mine was correcting me on a possible name that I had got wrong, that Wanstall was raised, and now the penny has dropped. I had Sarah Wanstall/Capp as Sarah Newby/Capp.

I have a William Ladd who married a Sarah Capp in 1826. She was a widow and we now believe her name to have been Wanstall. She died in Sholden, Kent in 1851 and William re-married Susannah Goodchild.

Someone in Oz contacted me three years ago and confirmed that her James Capp, married Sarah Wanstall and they had three children. Sarah b. 1817, James Wanstall b. 1821 and William b. 1823. She assumed Wanstall by the name of James' second name. By the same token, I thought Sarah was Newby because of a later child being named Newby. Bad move obviously.

These probably don't have any connection, but I thought I would mention them in case.

My maziden name was Wanstall, was yours? Sheila Thompson Hi Sheila, My grandmother was Alice Louise Wanstall, daughter of Charles and Emily Wanstall of Blean. She had 10 brothers and sisters and an adopted sister. Charles' father was William Samuel Wanstall of Herne, and his mother Hannah Lippingwell of Bredger. Any help? Sheila.

Sheila NZ - I dont think my George was from Blean or Herne - am currently thinking he was from Chatham Kent - which he constantly said was in Essex and mis-spelt 'Charham' 'Craham' and other variations. There was a George in Gillingham in 1861 census that could be him, but I cant fin any birth proof. Thanks for your reply. SheilaT
