The first competition of 2009!!!!
Hello Forum members,
We have a wonderful prize to give away - a book that has been donated by the Family History Partnership called, "Hw 2 *t ur Fmly Hstry (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=viewproduct&cat=&id=P85719&pageOffset=0)"
This quirky, surprisingly comprehensive, cheerfully presented guide will whet the appetite of children from 7 to 70 to discover their forebears, who they were and how they lived.
All you have to do is find the answers to the 20 questions below. All of the answers are to be found on Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php), the sponsors of Brit-Gen. Click on the Parish Chest symbol in the red bar at the top of the page and you are there.
Please PM me your entries to arrive by Midnight (GMT) on Sunday 25th January, when the competition will end. I will announce the winner (and the answers) on Monday 26th.
Also, there will be bonus marks awarded if you provide the correct product code for any of the answers that you give.
Good luck everybody!
1. Which Family History Society could provide you with the Monumental Inscriptions for Cherry Hinton?
2. Who would be able to supply you with a copy of a 1920 map of Canterbury?
3. In which area of research does Mulberry Coach House Books specialise?
4. In which section of Parish Chest would you find “Evidence on the Employment of Children“, first published in 1842?
5. Who wrote, “Something For Everybody” in 1861?
6. In which county would you find the Parish Registers of Moze?
7. What is the ISBN number for “Dating Nineteenth Century Photographs” by Robert Pols?
8. Which year’s census is available for Westmorland?
9. Under which county would you find the parish records for Cornwood?
10. Who would be able to supply a History of the Irish Regiments?
11. Which places does Humble's General Directory of 1824 cover?
12. What is Testamenta Vetusta?
13. Which years are covered by The Army Lists?
14. In which county will you find the parish records for Greenwich?
15. In which section could you find medal ribbons?
16. Which year is covered by Villaire Anglicum?
17. Where is St. Audoen's Church?
18. Which book would enable you to find out why it is unlucky to meet a barefooted man?

And here's another one excitedly clapping her hands together like a seal. :D
I've got a head *t 'cos I know where Cherry Hinton is, though as it took me ages to work out what ' *t ' meant :D , I suspect that by question 4 I'll probably be going |banghead|
I totally agree with Browneyes
And I can guarantee to anyone who hasn't entered one on here before it's great fun - oh, and don't forget to grab a notebook cos you never know where it might lead you! Browneyes
and provided you leave your list of 'I want' in many prominent places, you can say goodbye to opening bedsocks and bathsalts on Christmas morning. :) Some of the old books now published on CD are fascinating reads.
If you're a very new forum member please note that you have an equal chance of winning with someone who's been a forum member since 1909, as this competition is not based on how much you know about genealogy. :)
Happy hunting everyone.

Seriously, like Glenys, I enjoyed rummaging around in Parish Chest - all sorts of things I didn't know were there. Go on, everyone, have a go -it's fun.
Bo-Peep, maybe you should make it a condition of membership that people have to answer 3 questions about what's available before they are allowed to join. :D

Maybe I am missing some important link here, but is there a way to find absolutely everything Parish chest has from a particular supplier ?
From the Site Map you can get close, but it is still broken down by years, locations, wars, etc.
Is there anywhere on the Site Map that lists Suppliers, then lets you bring up everything that supplier has, regardless of it being a map, MI, shipping list, etc ???

Not as far as I am aware, Elaine. You can search by supplier, but within the different categories as listed in the table on the left of the home page.
Bo Peep will be along shortly to tell me if I am wrong! :D

Okay! You just have one week in which to PM the answers to me. My inbox is still intact and has not been completely frazzled, in spite of attempts to do so.
As the weather in Britain has been somewhat inclement (to say the least...) what is better than to settle down with a cuppa and browse through Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/) to find the answers.
Marie C..
18-01-2009, 11:33 AM
Well I've done most of it... just stuck on the medals question.
So not really worth sending(even if I could fathom how to do that!) as some clever clogs on here will have ALL the answers and All the ref numbers and the answer to the medals question.Shall go back to washing the mould off my wall. Ps Are there any consolation prizes such as the book on Irish country superstions... my cup of tea ?
Lots of jolly interesting stuff on Parish chest.M

Eeek! No pressure then. |banghead| I had, being such an organised person (!!! |doh|), scheduled it for tomorrow along with a couple of other geneaological things I wanted to do but no, I've suddenly been offered some temp work for a few weeks. Believe me, I'm not complaining, but I would like to know why it is that whenever I start getting on with all the jobs and goodies that I want to life suddenly opens the starting gate and shoves me back into the race again!! :D
I've got half way through the competition questions though. :D

Although the day is the same as the Bracknell Family History Fair (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35867), you will still be able to enter the competition until midnight.
Keep those entries coming!

Plus, the celebrations will be continuing on Sunday which is Rabbie's actual birthday. :)

Gallivanting from Merriam-Webster Online
Date: 1823
1 : to go about usually ostentatiously or indiscreetly with members of the opposite sex |oopsredfa
2 : to travel, roam, or move about for pleasure
*************************
Actually, both definitions sound more fun than a Burns Supper or the Bracknell Family History Fair. I have my entry in, so I'll do the gallivanting for all of us. |5cups|

How long did it take you to set up?
I will have you know it was very difficult.... even for clever folk..... and very time consuming
but jolly interesting.
The day is not yet done.... and there may well be late entries.....and maybe folk who looked through all the stuff might just be temped to buy from the Parish Chest!!! -Just need a Lotto win now!!! M

Talk about many a true word spoken in jest. Though the really annoying thing is that I have the CD of “Evidence on the Employment of Children“ so I know who produces it and I still can't find the blooming thing. |banghead| |banghead|
Any chance of the closing date being extended a wee bit - till say 25 Jan 2010? :D

I am shocked and confused that more people haven't entered. It's not until you peruse places like Parish Chest that you realise just how much info there is out there to help you. The only things you need are..
(a) a pc with access to the internet:D
(b) the ability to think of appropriate search words |idea|
(c) patience...something all family historians will have :)
(d) a large piece of paper and a pen that works and perhaps something to drink while you're perusing |5cups|
(e) enthusiasm! |jumphappy
Like Pam says...I do it because I enjoy it and every time I've entered a competition I've found something relevant to my own research.

I thought you all enjoyed our competitions but obviously, I was mistaken.
I am sure everyone does enjoy them. I had loads of messages when I set up the cathedrals competition saying how people had enjoyed it ... but very few completed entries! I think people start off very enthusiastically, then get sidetracked .. all too easy on the Parish Chest site! I had to be very disciplined to find the answers (whether right or wrong!!) - and then go back and look at things that had caught my eye ...... maybe you should not put such tempting things on Parish Chest!!!
There will probably be a flood of entries at one minute to midnight .. or, as I found with the cathedrals one, a few sneaky entries during the night - taking shameful advantage of the time difference!
Hope it is going well at Bracknell
